calling England!!! I need to correct myself!

Went to take apart my project 7x14 Daisy Brand (Farmingdale NJ era Rogers)to
get it re duco and saw some markings on the under belly of the 3pt throw off. What we thought was a Slingerland 3pt. is stamped "Made In England" Just like the correction of the Leedy Presto 2pt being a Premier Olympic 2pt. I took apart the only other Daisy that I have with a 3pt throw and found the same stamp with more lettering showing. Attached pics. I wonder if Premier was copying some American throw offs and giving them subtle changes like a twist in an arm or a larger/smaller tension knob. I know Rogers did some calf head supply over seas from the literature around. Also saw a 1938 Premier catalog that shows the 2pt.Olympic model#636 and they sold their own calf heads stamped Premier in the same catalog. They might of had a trade deal relationship with Premier when Cleveland started building drums and needed throw offs. They made their own badges, shells, heads and lugs in this R lug era. The drum I took to get re ducoed will be the remaining paint chip color of aged
white that is left on the 3pt. It was found with just the
Daisy badge and throw with butt plate. The shell was stripped of it's color and covered in contact paper
with some parts remaining. I will restore it and bring it
back to a proper Goodwill model.

Wondering if Premier provided all the American copies of throw offs for NJ Rogers Drum Co. or an independant maker out there.

Peace, Gary

Re: calling England!!! I need to correct myself!

Just checked"The Drum Book" A history of the rock drum kit by Geoff Nicholls:

pg15 bottom reads"Carlton Single snare c1937 The same type of three point snare strainer was exported to America for the Slingerland Radio King."

pg100 "By the early 1930s Premier was a major manufacturer of consoles, exporting to the US. During WW2 Premier was engaged in making sights for anti-tank guns, among other things, and the accuracy of the company's manufacturing increased dramatically."

and in addition...

A long time Slingerland collector, and friend, emailed me back after seeing the above Made In England pics:

"Another interesting note regarding the three point; I've surmised, after reading a small blurb on the web about the Liberty drum co., that, in typcial Slingerland fashion, Slingerland stole the 3 pt. from the Liberty drum co.
It was always assumed that Liberty was a jobber that got parts from Slingerland as they were essentially identical...turns out Liberty, me thinks, was making tube lug drums with 3 pt. throws before Slingerland...and Slingerland copied Liberty or bought stuff from them."

So it came from Carlton in the first place? Is that book correct to the year 1937? I thought Slingerland 3pt throw offs were used in the late 1920s and Liberty was before that. Liberty(Chicago IL) was in business 1926-Aug 1927.

Now wondering if the Leedy 2pt presto throw off was a copy of the Premier Olympic? Which came first the throw off or the egg...

Cool that the idea of using Premier throw offs on Rogers snare drums carried over to OH and were used until the early 1960s.

Peace, Gary

I was going to buy everthing he took apart and reassemble it. Only thing was those damm snare hoops went for 156 bux shipped!

14" High hoops/rims

I did manage to pick off 10 bass T rods and claws for 58 bux! Now my sky blue ripple pearl bass is done! I do need some inlay for the hoops. They are silver sparkle now.

Took some questions to the Mike Dolbear forum to finalize these thoughts:

http://www.mikedolbear.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59794

Now David just has to make the changes to the web page.

Thanks to Jack for the forum to get my thoughts out of my head and try to get a grip on this early era once and for all. Still tweaking and learning...
