Hi Nutbox

I have one of the mid sixties catalogues hiding in my loft somewhere from when I purchased my kit and I'll see if I can find it.

You may be surprised to learn that I did not find out that the drums I had purchased in the mid 60's were different to their American counterparts until about 10 years ago. As you are aware they were made by Ajax under licence and had "Made in England" stamped on the inside shells. The grain of the English shells also runs north to south and not around the drum as I think is the case with the American drums. I am told that the shells may be made from Birch as opposed to Rock Maple as described in the catalogue but nobody has been able to confirm this to me. If they are, then obviously English buyers at the time were being deceived! Certainly the dealer I bought the kit from never let on they were different. However they still sound great. Secondhand values of the English drums in the UK are significantly lower than American drums of the same era.

Hi Swivomatic, welcome , welcome , welcome. At last another English Rogers fan.
Yes, birch and occasionally beech. Hadn't noticed they specified the wood in the catalogue. Not all that buyers were decieved about either. Would love to see photos. You have had them from new? Wow!

Hi Guys

Found my 67/68 catalogue from just after the time I purchased the drums. I think I can trace that back to 1966.

The catalogue lists the drums as "Constellation" as played by Cozy Cole ie: 13x9 and 16x16 TT's 22x14 BD and 14x5 snare. The difference with the English kit was that it was supplied with a COB Dyna snare and not a wood PowerTone. It also lacked an additional Swivomatic cymbal holder on the BD.

More to follow!

Hi there,

You are not going to believe this but in the same bag as the catalogue I have also found an old 1965 diary of mine! (I knew that I was a horder but this is crazy!)

This shows that I purchased the kit on the 4th December 1965! (I was not far out).

The shell pack (including SD) cost me a total of £239 without cymbals which I already had. (Premier Super Zyns). Roughly about $475 I suppose at the time. I don't know what the exchange rate was then.

I part exchanged the kit with a "Beverley" for which I was given the princely sum of £60!

Wow the kit now has some providence..........I have been gigging it for 42 years!!!!!!!

We'd love to get your catalog posted in the catalog section. Can you scan it? I can then convert to PDF and post it.

Swivo, great that you have an exact date for your kit. That should make dating by serial numbers even more accurate.

Do I understand you to say that your catalogue is US and not English, it would be great if it were English.

I am sure that many would have bought an English Rogers kit believing it, or being lead to believe, that they were buying an American kit. Many try to pass them off as such, or themselves simply don't know. The number of emails I have exchanged with sellers on eBay who think they are selling an American kit (and therefore have an inflated idea of value). Here is another one, no mention of it being English, great kit though..............

Got this on eBay the other day. This is Rogers Drums (UK of course) Newsletter - First Edition.

The front cover has an interesting story of Roy Burns coming to the UK in 1965 and touring the country promoting "Rogers" drums, and three photos of him playing an ER kit.

The inner two pages I've already posted as photocopies from Dave Seville..............

And the back page...............

And there is more. This is a sales leaflet featuring ER in Grey Ripple. This must be 1963-64.

These items were in a box of railway magazines that the seller bought at an auction in Wales without knowing that these and other drum items were in the box.
