Keith Moon and the English Rogers photo-shoot.
Last week this drum came up on eBay.
It’s English Rogers in Blue Pearl wrap and with bread and butter lugs and looks like in very nice condition. My initial impression was that it was a bit unusual because that combination of B&B lugs and the later pearl wrap would only have happened for a short time around 1964 so there would be a long wait to try and match up with any other drums. I emailed the seller and asked how many lugs were cracked. The seller replied that only 2 were crack. So, I thought I could buy the drum, use the lugs and put the shell away and see what turns up.
I emailed the seller again just to check that this was not part of a kit that he was going to list bit by bit, and he said this, “Sorry we only have the one drum, came from the High Numbers later to become The Who, given to my partner for her little brother. You can see the whole kit in Moon’s biography “Dear Boy”. It was lent to them for a photo shoot. My partner was the boyfriend (did he mean girlfriend? – none of my business) of the drummer preceding Moon.”
I haven’t got a copy of this book, but I assume that he means this photo………………
I have made the pic of the drum for sale B&W and added another pic of a similar wrap but was genuinely in black – difficult to tell the difference.
In response to more questions he went on to say this…………….
“Haven’t been able to check out your link but probably is the same shot that I am referring to. Of course I have no documentary evidence of this otherwise I would have used it in the Ebay add, but I can assure you this drum was used prior to the WHO. The drummers name was Terry he was in to jazz which explains why he left the band but kept in touch hence the loan of the kit although it was never played by Moon. We firmly believe this to be part of the drum kit in that picture, the blue pearl is quite dark and I think in a black and white shot could easily be confused with black pearl, soon after Terry gave up the drums hence it was given as gift to my partners younger brother. It stayed in the loft ever since, I have put new heads on as originals were Everplay Extra!
We really don’t know what happened to the rest of it, this was the only drum given to my partner for her little brother to play with, this must have been mid to late 60s the drummer I told you about Terry went on to become a BT ENGINEER.”
I think that factors in favour of this being true are the fact that he did not use the info on eBay, did not tell the story in response to my first question, and did not have the photo ready to push the story. But is he correct? Are there any Moon fans out there who know any more about the circumstances around this photo shoot? Are there any more photos in the book?
My personal interest was only in the drum, I’m not especially a Moon fan, although he was obviously a great British drummer. I was the only one who bid on the drum at the starting price of £10, but the reserve was £80. One of these drums in a similar condition sold last week for about £30. Unfortunately the seller has been lead to believe that the drum is worth more.
If the Moon connection was correct then it might be worth the extra to someone. I would like the story to be correct and I believe that the seller believes that it is. However, IMHO the dates for the kit in the photo with Moon and the date for the drum for sale don't add up.
In the bottom left corner of the photo shoot picture you can see that the floor tom has the Ajax legs. In my experience this dates the kit in question to 1961/62, but the drum for sale would appear to be later. I have never seen Ajax legs on a floor tom with the later wrap pattern. There are many earlier peal pattern kits that have the latter “knobby” style Rogers legs.
Here is an example of what I mean. Early and latter wrap patterns, and note the knobby legs on the early pearl.

But hey, I don’t know everything.
Anybody any thoughts? I posted this on the Dolbear site hoping that a Moon fan might know something but nothing turned up.

Re: Keith Moon and the English Rogers photo-shoot.
That tom does look HOT! Nice color. I have alot of early stuff {Lps} by the Who. Ill take a look and if I see something will post it. I must say, I really like that color. The rims look like High boys too.

Re: Keith Moon and the English Rogers photo-shoot.
Hi Rogerso', it isn't claimed that Keith Moon ever played this. The kit was borrowed just for the photo shoot.
Yes they will be tall boys cos as far as I know that is all we ever had over here.
