These photos are fantastic! Look at those brand new, untested even, snares. Was it considered a good job? I mean as far as factory work goes? Good pay/benefits w/a decent reputation for safety etc.?

All drums had to pass through this person who checked each one for blemishes, tuned it using a mallet, then did a final cleaning before putting it in a box (or stacking for boxing later).

Working on the drum line was more desirable than the guitar or amp line. The Fender factory was much larger, more politics, more drama, more pressure. The Rogers line was a small handful of people who got along well, and they knew their jobs. Some of them stuck to the same thing, others rotated around different tasks. I can't recall anyone getting injured on the job. I can tell you that we did things that OSHA and the EPA would not allow today. I don't recall how their pay compared to other factory jobs, but their paycheck was coming from CBS, so they had the usual big company benefits. We started at 5:30am. (When the shift was done, I'd go do my R&D job or help the marketing guy.)
