1983 - Manufacturing Supervisor

By 1983, I had a dual role; all the R&D plus supervision of all manufacturing. The graffiti expressed how happy I was to get stuck with running the drum line.

Towards the end, there wasn't a whole lot of R&D to do in terms of new designs because it was evident that it wouldn't get funded. There was always an aspect of R&D that supported manufacturing. For example, if a die-cast part needed tweaking or a re-design, I'd do the drawing (this was pre-CAD so all that was done with a pencil on vellum). I'd then work with the vendor who'd make the parts for us. I remember going to the local company that did the chrome plating. I sincerely doubt that the SCAQMD (South Coast Air Quality Management Board) lets places like that exist in SoCal today. In fact, if you compare the chrome legs on Rogers Memriloc stands from the '80s with stands that were coming in from Taiwan, the Rogers plating was horrible. Our plating guy told me that it was only going to get worse because of the restrictions the environmental regulatory folks were putting on his business. Probably wasn't such a big deal in the Republic of China.
