1983 - Gluing Pearl to Shell
This machine is also pictured in that photo from 1980. Here Victor is guiding the pearl onto the shell.
The machine would roll the shell and press the pearl onto it. He needed to be careful to get the seam perfectly straight on the shell. It also required some finesse because if he let the maching press too hard where the seam overlapped, it could crack the pearl. If that happened, the pearl would have to be stripped off.
The glue was a heavy duty contact cement that had to dry before being rolled onto the shell.

Re: 1983 - Gluing Pearl to Shell
My drums were probably made in '70 or '71 and whatever method used to put the pearl to the shell worked and worked well, none of my drums' pearl has lifted or cracked.

Re: 1983 - Gluing Pearl to Shell
My Dad had a cabinet shop years ago. I grew up being the Laminate Guy. True,I was a kid-but Dad worked my brother & I like we were borrowed mules!!
So I am familiar w/this process. I'm sure it's much more difficult than a flat surface(like counter tops),but it's the same principle. Specific window of "stickability".
