Those look to be all black, or silver metallic. Were those wraps mass produced due to larger demand, or perhaps did they produce certain wraps on Mondays, others on Tuesdays, etc?
Still.. a lot of toms for one room. I coudln't be trusted in that room to not bang on a few.

1983 - Packing Drums
This is a picture of Lance packing drums to put in the Finished Goods warehouse. We would run a lot of drums through the line with the same color pearl for efficiency. These drums were being shipped all over the world. We did not build the drums as, for example, a "5-piece set." We'd do a run of all one size, and send them to Finished Goods, which was a huge warehouse. When an order came in, a warehouse person would just pick the boxes off the racks. If you ever see a set of Rogers drums where one or two drums has the badge in a different place than the others, it's because we were transitioning to a different design spec and the person picking boxes had no way to know that. Thus a set could have drums that were built months apart.
One of the frustrations for the distribution folks was the fact that we were shipping boxes that were mostly full of air. They would have loved it if we could have nested the drums into fewer boxes. Which is what the Chinese drum makers were good at.
Here's a crazy one. I was visiting Keller to see how the shells were made. We were walking by a huge stack of maple sheets waiting to get stacked and formed into shells. The guy who ran the place, can't think of his name right now, tells me that the Rogers specification they gave him (before I worked there) was very explicit regarding what the outside ply could look like. It forbid any birds-eye, curley, or highly figured grain. He told me that if they came across any birds-eye, they'd use it for one of the inside plys. I thought I was going to drop dead right there. He was told that the rationale was that, because the drums were individually boxed for the warehouse, a set of natural maple drums might end up with one birds-eye drum and the rest looking very plain. Well, yeah I get that, but holy crap. It was me running the line now so if I saw a shell come through with birds-eye, I'd set the thing aside until we could decide what to do with it. Now he could have been feeding me a load of crap, but I can tell you I got the spec on those drawings changed to allow him to use "highly figured grain patterns" on Rogers shells. In any case, shells like that were rare. I hand picked my natural maple shells and I had to dig through every one we had to find much of a grain pattern at all. Dave Gordon and I both have a birds-eye 5x14. Very rare and, from what I could tell from Keller, happy accidents.

Gee whiz. And I thought I was fortunate to have just a plain old plain jane straight grain 5" maple XP10 Dyna. I thought it was the only one left. And now I've been 2-upped by the Rogers masters. Makes mine look second rate. Shoot!
