Cool! Here are more long-dead drummers - check out those sticks - and here are some pretty old drums, with the maker identified in the text.

I wonder what the oldest picture of a drummer is? There are a few photographs around from the Mexican-American War, so 1840's or so?

And did anyone here ever read any "Hornblower" novels?
When action was near the captain always ordered,
"Beat to quarters."
Drummers were shipboard at least as far back as
the Napoleonic Wars... probably longer.

I'm guessing that photo is from the period between 1800-1900.

I wonder if after that photo, the guy on the right challenged the other one to double-flamacues at 20 paces.
