Cupped washers???

I found this early Tower blue sparkle bass and it has washers I've never seen before. In addition to the regular small flat washer and lock washer there is a dished/cupped washer too.

Also strange fishing wire on the interior top 2 screws. What was hanging in there???

Cool logo head to boot! Peace, Gary

I haven't seen any examples of those washers before. Another part of the Rogers puzzle!

Maybe they had a light bulb hanging in there????

Re: Cupped washers???

Mr. Kat, yes-good eye. That drum was passed to me from another collector. I added the orig. calf. I think the OH metal design was shaped from them. They are phatter in the middle compared to the "R" faced heavy brass ones before it(all 1940s lugs). Those later 1955-57 B+Bs had the same pudgy middle shape. Some of NJ carried over a few states with that Rogers name and idea of building the best drums. Getting closer to 1964...Peace, Gary

Gary, I sure as heck did not mean to steal your thread. I mean, even little old me can see the importance of cupped washers. Ahem.

But the wooden wartime lugs? Man oh man! Show us some close ups in another thread, pretty pretty PLEASE!

I have never seen any washers like that. And I have pulled apart and cleaned a good deal of Tower bass drums. My fingers hurt just thinking about the process.

I left the top 2 plates alone. Not my place to go messing with someone elses fishing wire. In the middle of cleaning right now...

Gary, since the drum had some parts loosened up to get that wire in there, I wouldn't be surprised if those cupped washers were added to the drum at that time.

I have never seen anything like those in any Rogers drum, and since this drum was 'tampered' with, I assume those washers were added by someone for some reason.

Maybe the wires were to hang Christmas lights inside the drum...

Re: Cupped washers???

Dan, I bought this bass from an ebay auction sold out of OH. It had logo heads front and back and was dirty from never being cleaned or taken apart. Interior screw powder untouched.
The guy that sold it was the same seller that sold that logo-less champagne sparkle center b+b lug kit with clear interiors that used to belong to a Rogers assembler. Then Cherie resold it again on Ebay.

I looked up the initials on the front logo head just to see if this guy is selling original Rogers gear from the people that put it together way back when...Two people listed in the Rogers Book with those initials. 1.Roberta Leopard(assembly) and 2. Ronald Leopold(research and development). I think I bought Robertas Tower bass. Why the cupped washers...I don't know. Cool logo head with girly glitter on the R. and yes I think about this stuff way too much!

The lug screws could of been too long and they needed a spacer on this early beavertail lug drum. Like the early phat b+b screws that used to crack the stems/posts off early beavertail lugs. One more transition hardware change out of Covington. Just a thought...

 Peace, Gary
