B&B Playability
This question has been on my mind for a while, but I've been afraid to ask. That is - are drums with B&B lugs considered playable? Or is this considered a no-no due to the tendancy for the casings to crack?
My kit has B&B's on the hi-tom & kick. About half are uncracked. Those that are cracked generally have very small cracks. I want to play them, but haven't only because I need cymbals & stands to complete the kit ($$$).

Re: B&B Playability
I played my B&B lug set for forty years before the lugs started to crack.

Re: B&B Playability
I think it depends on how bad they are cracked/broken, how high/tight you tune your drums and how hard you hit.
Lots of guys play B&B kits with cracked lugs and have the attitude, "if they don't fall apart and they will tune up, play'em"
I don't have any B&B kits, so I can't give you any info from my experience with them. I have snare drums with B&B lugs, but I don't play them out.

Re: B&B Playability
In thinking about it some more, I would worry more about a B&B snare than toms or bass drum. You won't have that much tension on those drums but a snare will have quite a bit.
Play 'em, that's what they're for.

Play those things!! Do not feel bad, they want to be played. I have made some of my favorite recordings on B&B drums.

Re: B&B Playability
I have seen many Rogers drums over the years that were tuned up to the point of stress. Stress on the pearl finish as well as splitting of the lugs themselves. Those tabs that are held to the drum tight by the 2 interior scews can make an indentation into the pearl. Some worse than others. These indents lead to pearl splits. Beavertail lugs make an indent but are not as crude as B+B bent over metal tabs. Also, the lack of a backing post that goes into the shell from the lug causes it to float on top of the shell instead of going into it. This can cause a push or pearl bulge at the top of the lug where it is pulled from the tension rod. Rough finish sharp metal tabs and fragile lug construction wasn't the best way to make a lug. If you know what you are up against then you can work with any condition. These early Rogers drums do sound great and record well if not abused. The thin brass construction acted like little brass resonant bell chambers to enhance those great shells. Rogers was on to something here but the solid Beavertails were soon to follow. So...Yes! use all your Rogers drums in any form shape and condition but do keep an eye out for pearl bulge on a drum with a lot of tension. Play on!
Peace, Gary

Re: B&B Playability
Thanks guys. Seems the consenus is cautiously positive. So I'm going to play them - but the issue is still in my head, which is not a good thing when it comes time to play.
Arrggh. I'm still not sure what to do. I end up hitting pretty heavy sometimes if the rest of the band is playing too loud. I hate that.
This is awesome: quote: The thin brass construction acted like little brass resonant bell chambers to enhance those great shells.
Thanks Gary. I just put coated Powerstroke 3's on the res sides of the toms, with coated Ambassdors on the beater sides - and I like the combination. I might try an even lighter gauge or clear on the beater sides. When tuned low - these shells both have this round undertone the sustains for days - it just comes to life. I've never had a tom do that before -- not like this.
