Silver Soldering cracked B&B Lgus?

Does anyone know about this technique "silver soldering" B&B lugs and what exactly it does?
Repair the cracked lug to be whole? (fill in the crack)
Does it make the lug stronger and does it last?
Does the lug look like new?

Is it a good thing to do to a cracked lug to make it last and be playable?

Any ideas or knowledge of this technique?
Thanks Mike

I was a welder many years ago and silver soldering won't do the trick.

Been there done that {tried it too}.... Nothing will stick to the chrome or make it adhere. Braising will work, but will discolor the chrome and will make them even softer once heat is applied. What I always wanted to try was "cold braising" them. I saw a gadgit on an infomercial once and thought to buy it and try it. It would make you rich too. An average broken lug sells for about a buck {mild crack}. Unbroken bass lugs can sell for as much as 22 each. Repro lugs are 22 shipped.

The reason I ask this question is because the owner of the 6 1/2" Dyna Sonic on Ebay had responsed to my question about cracked lugs by stating the following....

The silver solder is what to use for drawn brass. A tech. from the Atomic Knowles Lab did the work. I've been playing this drum in its current state for 3 years- no problems. It is a warm and beautiful Dynasonic. I doubt there are many B&B Rogers snare drums that are 100% playable!

I actually ended up buying the snare, so now I am working on whether I need some more large uncracked B&B snare lugs. I already have 3 extra saved up.

Any comments?
Mike

Congrades on your drum! Theres a secrit that the lab may have tried. Thats heating the lug to the temperature just above the temp of the solder in an electric oven and making a mold to house the lug till the solder cooled and without running out. This is alot more trouble than its worth and has no guarenties of holding, cus solder is lead w/silver added and the heat wil "anneal" the brass, thus softening it.
These lugs can be found on early Tower bass drums. All my drums are 100% and playable.

Thanks Rogersoholic,
I had the bug after I missed the one you got! We have quite a collection going on this forum! That snare does not have the right frame, but it is an early frame, just not a 1st generation one - too bad. It would have been a good buy with that frame.

But it is good as it is!

Mike did you recieve the drum yet? Let me know what you find with those lugs and if they are bonded. {may want to use a jewlery loop}. I just sold 60 crack ones and sitting on more. Would fix em if I could. I wish I could help you out with extras, I only have 1 extra. emoticon

Rogersoholic,
No I have not received the drum yet.
When I do I will post it up in the photo gallery and include a few close ups of the lugs on this thread.

You sold 60? cracked lugs! That is quite an inventory of cracked lugs - but I guess I am getting there, I now have about 34 when I count the ones on the Headliner kit. I am definitely going to need to find a few for the future.

I will probably get the drum at the end of the week and I will follow up asap.
Thanks Mike

Many drums came in with bad wraps and drilled holes. And I also bought a tower drum for some clean hoops and upgraded the hardware on what I have. Some are from people who "claimed" they werent cracked on eBay. Last lot I bought cost me 13 bux each {ouch}. So Ill cull cracked ones for uncracked. My 14" fl tom is done with lugs now Im working on a 16" part of a shell pack I bought about a year ago and am almost finished with it too. I do have some mild cracked ones. Small crack lower left. 1st place they usually let loose. Let me know if maybe you can use em till something better comes along. I usually get a cupla bux each for cracked ones.

I was taking the lugs off my drums this afternoon and I found this one.

Looks as if it was repaired in the factory and then plated. Looks like the tab broke off and they mustn't have wanted to waste it. No others like it out of the 50 or so that I have.

B&B lugs may have been less trouble if they were all like this.

Alan
