BIG "R" BADGES
Rogers Big "R" badges started in 1975 in Fullerton, CA. There was a great deal of waste using them and when they re-ordered them they used the same serial number sequence. So using Big "R" serial number are not an accurate way to date drums.
All USA made Rogers drums have the USA on the foil Big "R" badge. There were periods when there wasn't a serial number. This seems to be during the XP8 time and after 1980. They might have run out of ones with serial numbers and used the one without serial numbers until new one were ordered and received.
They just built drums, they didn't care about serial number.

This seems to be the case with all Rogers drums, eh?
Bruce - you should write a book. It could be text book style, with all of this great information you have in your brain. I'd buy it!

Re: BIG "R" BADGES
Thanks man.
I'm working on a new Rogers dating guide, with help of other Rogers guys, that will have a lot of this and other information. It will have more than just number and years.

Re: BIG "R" BADGES
Interior, hardware, and various offerings of drums, are even more vitally important in dating a Big R kit, probably than any other era. That and of course knowing when a particular number was originally purchased. My silver metallic set was purchased November, 1977. I have the original receipt, I got it from the original owner in Nov. 1979.

Re: BIG "R" BADGES
As previously posted, I bought my Londoner 7 in July 1980. I hand picked the unfinished shells at the Monrovia factory (tobacco sunburst). These do not have serial numbers. Hope this information helps.

Re: BIG "R" BADGES
Here's something I just discovered through a hunch and some detective work.
In looking through the Big R catalogs, the 5 ply Big R drums have the Big R badge (and thus the vent) placed either to the left or right of the Memriloc mount. The XP8 drums have the badges/vents placed opposite the Memriloc mount. The effect is that the XP8 badges face away from the audience while the 5 ply Big R will either face toward or away, depending upon whether a drum is positioned left or right.
In my opinion, the change was an aesthetic improvement, as this gives the drums a more pleasing and understated appearance.
We can also tell a 5 ply from an XP8 by the appearance of reinforcement rings in the 5 ply, and no rerings on the XP8s. However, many of our eBay auctioneer pals are illiterate when it comes to drums, so it can sometimes be difficult to tell what's what from poorly posted pictures. Now we can identify XP8s/5 plies by the positioning of the badge.

Re: BIG "R" BADGES
Not sure about the Big R badges, but I know I've seen some 13 script toms that had script logos on both sides. This was so it could be used as a single mounted tom on the left, or the second tom in a 12-13 double mount on the right.

Re: BIG "R" BADGES
I have an 9 piece double bass set with big R badges, and they have no serial #s or USA, just a plain R. I am hoping they are xp-8 and not cheap imitations, like taiwan. Id sure like to know, than-you, daninflag@msn.com
