The Ploughmans Black XP8
They have arrived.
First off, I give props to the seller, lardogloonze_0. His description while brief, was accurate.
From the auction description:
quote: Your looking at a Rogers Big R drum set. I am not sure of year. I am guessing with some research that they are late 70's early 80's. Sizes indicate 1970's bebop. As you can see the set is black and has some minor marks here and there .Very minimal. Hard to see from a few feet away. This set is in very good shape. Has memory locks in hardware. Sizes are 14x14 floor tom,8x12 and 9x13 rack toms, and 18x18 bass drum. Rack toms and floor tom have lightly used Attack batter heads and rogers resonant heads. Floor tom has clear Attack resonant head
What he failed to mention was that the minor marks here and there are miniscule. This set, straight from the boxes were well tuned. The heads did not look lightly used, they are Terry Bozzio ATTACK Medium single ply, and you could literally count the stick marks on them, almost on your fingers. Props to him on his shipping job. The packing is probably one of the very best I have received in 9 years of ebay buying.
This was a fantastic buy.
I did a quick set up, and examination of each individual drum, and yes, they were tuned very well, original Clear Ambassador ROGERS resonant heads on all drums except the 14x14.
After a few brief taps, I went to work.
Took the 14x14 completely down to the bare shell, went over some minor things with novus 1. Polished the wrap with Mothers something or other. popped all the hardware in a bowl of Dawn, and then reassembled. It looks like a brand new drum.
Pics to follow. Camera is charging. Ill update this soon.

What? Dawn? I thought you liked Patina!
Actually, I'm thinking that Patina is good for Daytons and prior, but if a drum looks close to new, you should probably restore it to perfect.
Anyway, Ploughman, sounds like you're the kid in the candy store. Great score!!!

Re: The Ploughmans Black XP8
The Pics......... The Specs.......The Issues.
The Specs......
16x18, Factory, Bass Drum
8x12
9x13
14x14 Factory Floor Tom with legs
The Issues.
Overall Condition. 9.5/10. Some extremely minor defects in the finish, nothing visible from 4-5 feet away. Chrome is excellent. Extremely minor pitting on one or two lugs. Minor area of pitting on the 12" hoops. Over all, chrome is nearly perfect. Original resonant heads on all drums.
The BD tom post receiver mount is backwards, from the factory. The thumbscrew faces the player and not away from the player. So I am unsure if this was a later change made or if it actually left the factory backwards. Either way, theres no possible way to change that.
I am a very happy man.

Re: The Ploughmans Black XP8
Gorgeous, just gorgeous. I love the maple hoops. Sets off the drums nicely, and accents that beautiful snare.
Maybe the receiver was set the other way on the 18" bass drum for a reason...? Sure don't know what it could be.
