Big "R" Value

Been browsing around and I'm alittle confused as to why the BigR series don't hold as much collector value Vs it's earlier brothers. As far as I know the keller 5 ply shell construction is the exact layout from the early sixties till the 8 ply came out,if anything I would assume as years progressed Keller might of used better quality of veneer grades and improved the shell structural strength over time.
I'm starting to gather a few big r components,so relatively speaking if I wanted to change to cosmetic appearence of the wrap to something that appeals to my liking,it would'nt drastically change the face value as long as it was tastefully done. The wrap I want to apply is called zebra glitter, go to to this link and click wraps under glitters, then click the zebra sample and post your opinions............Jack

I think a rewrap in a non specified color will hurt the value, unless you're starting with orphans anyway.

The XP8s are showing more value than the 5 plies because the drums are extremely durable and can still be used as a traveler today. There was a time in the early to mid Fullerton era where quality was perceived to have suffered, not compared to other manufacturers--Rogers was still tops, with Memriloc hardware and superb shell construction--but compared to the extraordinary care and loving that went into the Dayton and prior drums. Quality returned with the XP8s as a "last hurrah" before the company succumbed to the corporate raider shenanigans of the 1980s, not to mention the appearance of inexpensive but high quality foreign competition.

Also, the script logo has a mystique about it that was lost with the garish Big R look. This was abated somewhat when the badge was mounted on the back side of the drums on the XP8s, thereby showing nothing to the audience and offering a more understated appearance.
Also, the wood Dynas and Supertens were reintroduced with the XP10 models in 1982 and 1983. These drums and the XP8s in general are seeing their values climbing. The 5 plies will see an increase, too, as they are superb drums compared to some of the cheap stuff being produced today.

Yes, most of the kit parts will be orphans, I simply refuse to participate in those bidding wars, plus I won't pay what some are asking for a starting bid on ebay for an all original kit, you sound like an avid collector and I appreciate you educating me on the Rogers Big R. When the drums arrive,I'll try and post some pictures......Jack

They will for sure! This site is the focal point. The madness starts here! Bring in your hungry drummers and give 'em a dose of Rogers magic! They'll be addicted before they know it, and all the Rogers drums they collect will be having babies before they have room in their house for more hungry mouths to feed!

Being the lucky man that I am, I own a Cleveland three ply kit, a Dayton five ply, two Big R fullerton fivers, and two XP8 kits. I can understand the mystique in the Clevelanders, those three ply shells finished in that flat gray lead paint have a wonderful marriage of resonance and projection. Beautiful tone. and value that goes up like the price of crude. Pretty much the same for the dayton five ply shells. Resonance and projection.

On the Memrilock drums..... I think that as more and more drummers quit drinking the RIMS/Isolation coolaid, more people are going to be looking to these rock solid setups, going for the vintage vibe in something they see affordable. This era of Rogers is still well within the reach of the "just anybody" guy. I think in the next ten years we are going to see a lot of Big R drums rewrapped. Except for teh black and maybe the NEWhite. That was for me the biggest weak point. The wrap is not durable in the long run.
Yes, my set is 32 years old this year, but if I had been exclusively playing that set over the last ten years, it would have already been rewrapped. I do not think rewrapping these drums is going to greatly decrease their value, as eventually, all of them are going to need it. That heavy plastic wrap ....... silver metallic, gold metallic, etc..... while it does not fade, it does show stress cracking that eventually leads to seperation. And I do not think there is a right equivelant available. I think seeing drums redone in a classic Rogers finish, any of the onyx colors, sparkles and glitters........ is going to actually help retain value, and keep these great drums in the game.

And I just love my XP8s.

The tobacco burst to me are in a different league and will no doubt become increasingly valuable to all collectors in time, just hang on to them emoticon......Jack

Ploughman, What colors came in the Big R kits, the ones I have coming are in white, with the FT bruised up a bit and white is not one of my favorite colors for any kit,so what are the Rogers sought after colors in pearl, glitter and onyx and hardest to find.........Jack

I'm fortunate to have a couple of B&B 3 ply outfits, as well as a Dayton Headliner and an XP8 Londoner 7 in the holy grail tobacco sunburst finish. By a strong margin, the XP8s are my favorite drums. The finish is extraordinary and the sound is awesome.

That lacquer finish is very fragile, however. I stopped gigging just as I got these new in 1980, so they mostly sat in a studio and then were in storage for over 20 years, so they fortunately don't show any wear, just patina.

Jack, here's the XP8 color chart. I think the most sought after finishes are tobacco sunburst and natural maple. But platinum, metallic silver and midnight mist are colors you never see.
