One Down and A Couple More To Go
I know this will probably raise a few eyebrows as expected but after being wrapped in plastic for some 35 years started to take it's toll on the B/R shells by buckling the shell at the lug mounts and so I made a decision to stain them to preserve the shells roundness another 35 years hopefully
I have about 30 plus hours, along with lots of elbow grease in removing glue, sanding, appling stain and minwax poly, sanding, poly again and again and agian, you get the picture . Don't know if I quite like the gloss shine appearance of the poly, might go back and give an antique finish before shipping to Precision drums to re-cut bearing edges, reglueing badges and install breather grommet......so what do you thinks?................Jack

That's gorgeous! I can imagine a whole set of these as XP8s! I like the color and the gloss. I wouldn't change a thing.

Re: One Down and A Couple More To Go
In fact--and maybe this sounds weird--but since this is no longer "period correct" (and who the heck cares) I'd love to see these with the correct Memriloc hardware, but with vintage script badges. Forget the Big Rs, and consider the classic script. I think these will become a valuable commodity. Kind of like, what would Rogers have done if they had stayed in business for a few more years? Jack, your drums are IT. Awesome!

If Rogers had stayed in business.......a feller like Ray Ayotte would have found employment.

Re: One Down and A Couple More To Go
I just don't know what to say as I'm completely overwhelmed by your positve feedback,I was'nt expecting this from you die hard Rogers fans (US) Thank You all!!!!
Tommykat1........ you sound as pumped-up as I am with the outcome of these shells,I've did a few shells years ago but nothing as pretty as these. The color is Cherry from Cabot with about four coats, then after it dried I went back over the stain lightly with a green scotchbright pad to give the appearance of weathered rustic look, pictures don't show it but it's there, then I applied several coats of poly to fill the deeper pores of the vaneer, then went back and sanded till the d- pores appeared flush with the good vaneer and applied one more coat of stain, all in all I have about six coats of poly. I just love the Cheery finish and it's allusion of darker shades from different light reflections.
I'll give the original logo some thought, might have to consider using a two tom stand for correct angle view as Rogers drill the mounting arm at an offset. I'll post some more picture after cutting the edges.........jack

Re: One Down and A Couple More To Go
Jack, anybody from a mile away can see the love and energy you put in these. I'd really love to see the proud old script logo on them. Maybe brass plated. Seriously. Would that look cool or what?
Somebody needs to be the first to do this--refit an XP8 with the retro logo--but you wouldn't want to if the drums were in an original finish, ie "preserved" as an antique.
But you've taken these to the next level. Nothing Rogers (or anyone else) ever made had a finish as perfect as this. therefore, the square, garish Big R just doesn't cut it in my book. I think that eventually Rogers would have gone back to the script logo. In fact, I think they would have settled on the earlier script logo that was only around for a year or two. Just an observation.
So a brass plated script logo on perfectly lacquered 8 ply New England Rock Maple, cured and aged for 28 years. Put the black or green felts under the lugs. Find an XP10 Dyna (or make one with a Keller shell and some donor parts from a COB). You'd have the perfect hybrid, with the construction documented on this site.
Yeah, baby...
