Rogers Satellite "Skinny" Snare

I finally received the Rogers Satellite "Skinny" drum last Saturday. I have not cleaned or otherwise touched it, so these are the "before" photos.

This is a really cool snare. It has to be seen to be appreciated. I almost passed on it, but I'm glad I didn't. Amazing idea, really. Rogers should have called it the "Skinny and Light" drum, because it weighs in at about five pounds. It's easy to carry around, and you could get by on a song or two (with brushes) with it just sitting in your lap cross legged!

Note the strainer is part of the frame (one of Joe Thompson's patents.)

This came with the original tensioners which are of the flat "non-blip" type. Since the tees are steel and the special frame is aluminum (aluminium to our overseas pals), there is a good chance of stripping the frame if the tees are overtightened. That defect and poor sales resulted in less than 200 of these being manufactured.

Note that the bottom head is tensioned tighter than the top head--you can see by the tensioner length. The construction of the bottom head (Ambassador snare) versus the top head (Aquarian Texture Double Thin) also may contribute to the disparity.

I plan to clean the girl up and give her the correct Rogers snare wires and strings at some point in time. But right now, it's a cool time machine just to look at and play.

The drum has a high metallic pitch with a great rimshot, and especially sounds good with brushes.

The chrome is pretty darn dirty, but there is no pitting anywhere. In this shot, it's difficult to tell the difference between the chrome and the black painted aluminum (sorry, "aluminium!).

Congratulations. Those are fun little drums and yours looks like a nice one. As you know, be very, very carefull when tensioning. I never take mine past a medium tension which fattens it up a bit without the loss of sensitivity. I also put a little white grease on the rods so they slide through the threads more smoothly.

Powertone, I really appreciate your counsel, as I knew from a previous post that you had one of these--and it's obviously in great shape.

I also had noticed--even before I purchased the drum--that the tees looked awfully long.

Questions:

1) How long are your tees?

2) Yours appear to have the blip, which I think is correct. Mine are the older style flat tensioners, and may be too long. Bet I could find a home for them (in trade)!

3) Note that my lower head is tensioned a lot tighter than the upper. I'm guessing it's the head construction, but I don't really know. What style/make heads are you using on yours?

I'd love to have one of those for my collection, if any of you decide to let one go, or run into another one, please let me know.

Re: Rogers Satellite "Skinny" Snare

Tommykat.... The rods are 1 5/8" overall length. They are pretty short. When tightened, they don't seem to reach the opposite hoop. The only concern I would have about a longer rod is that it would hit the opposite hoop when tightened.

Might be very difficult to find originals in the shorter length. If you want to go with the shorter ones, I would find some modern rods in that length and put those flat side rods away for a rainy day. Can't have too many of those laying around.

Flat vs blips on the tension rods..... Probably should be blips as the satellites tended to be sold during the late Dayton/early Fullerton eras. However, never say never when it comes to Rogers. I've heard that Rogers used up some old stock parts when they moved to Fullerton. Perhaps they used up some extra rods that were flat sided and so what if they were a bit longer.

When you clean the drum, make sure to try to get any gunk out of the threads in the shell and rods. Then be careful when starting the rods so as not to get any cross threading. Tune it up and enjoy.
