Local Find - 1965 Wood Dynasonic, Silver Sparkle
Got this today! I believe it's a '65, Cleveland era, no extra holes or issues, only non-original part is the top rim. I'm not going to say what I paid because you will hate me.
Almost forgot - serial number 10xxx.

Bruce dated my 10407 to late 66, early 67.
Nice find.

Re: Local Find - 1965 Wood Dynasonic, Silver Sparkle
What should I look for to date the drum? At this page, if you click on Bruce Felter, all of Bruce's drums in the 11xxx range say 1965.
http://vintagesnaredrums.com/other_collections.html
Maybe the serial numbers have since been updated?
The drum was originally bought by a local guy at a music store in Indiana for $200. The store told him that it would have been worth more, but that all Rogers drums had interior gray paint, so that this drum was either modified or wasn't original. He contacted me through my site.

Re: Local Find - 1965 Wood Dynasonic, Silver Sparkle
Dont you just love it when................. someone sees a holiday and thinks a Dynasonic should have the same interior finish? That was a super rich find.
Here is the post from bruce, it was in the Dating Guide thread, on the first page.

No, I changed it........ I have only one drum I positively know when it walked out of the music store.
But here are the rest of them.
Dynasonics,
D706061, 1977, I have the original sales receipt from Modesto Music, Modesto Ca.
53004, late fullerton, 74-75 big R type bottom hoop all original.
13723, Early 5 line 67
10407, Late 7 line, 67 Elongated Throw, Got this one from Kelly smith.
D114608 maple Big R 1983
D122346 maple Big R 1983
D731420 maple Big R 8x14, 1980
Powertones.
3627, Cleveland clockface cob, beavertails, 1964-65?
3732, Cleveland elongated wrapped wood, beavertail, 64-65
15697 Dayton Tag two of the beavertails on this are deteriorated in a fashion which suggests high heat exposure. Ive seen heated chrom before, that doesnt immediately look damaged. The rest of the drum is fine. I wonder if this could be from the Factory Fire period.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the info. Big "R" drums are hard to date because of the re use of the serial numbers (when they ordered new rolls of foil tags, they started with the same series of numbers)
53004 last of the oval badge Dynasonic's mid 1974
13723 ---1968 Dayton
10407----mid 1967
Big "R" Maple ----1983
Powertone 3623----end of 1963
Powertone 3732----early 1964, someone changed the throw.
Powertone 15697----early 1967. The intense heat from the Covington fire (February 4th 1967) did buckle lugs. (Info from Rob Cook's Rogers Book) Those lugs might be from fire.
Thanks,
Bruce

I hope that wasnt too confusing. The 10407 is the Seven Line 5x14 I bought from Kelly Smith, just about the time he moved north to central California. We met at the GC Fresno parking lot, spent about an hour an a half talking drums. He was a great guy. Life just wasnt fair to him.

Re: Local Find - 1965 Wood Dynasonic, Silver Sparkle
Very interesting...mine is 10263...would you say mid '66? Would you say that the dates at the vintagesnaredrums site are a year or two off?
I have to say, it is a true joy and pleasure just holding and looking at this thing in person. What a special drum. No wonder Bruce was so fond of them.

Re: Local Find - 1965 Wood Dynasonic, Silver Sparkle
I think those numbers were posted early on, before Bruce started revising the dating guide. I know he was working on it, some of the research was from here, and several other collectors, and sites. The old dating guide that Kelly Smith had worked up ......he even said there were a lot of holes in it. I do not know who has picked up the research from where Bruce left it, if anyone. I really do miss his input and wisdom. Rob Cook did not include the dating guide in his 2nd Edition because of its inaccuracy.

Good job, MLVBS! I know what you mean about just holding the thing and looking inside. You want to keep doing it over and over. It's tough even to put the head on!
Great score, dude!

Re: Local Find - 1965 Wood Dynasonic, Silver Sparkle
I won this dyna last night, to take the top rim from, as well as frame, which I think is incorrect on the wood dyna. I'll need some puresound wires as well, unless anyone here has some originals for sale. Don't worry, I'll be making the COB right when I can find the parts...I just want to get the wood dyna up and running.
DYNA
Also, you folks familiar with ebay seller pOOder, also known as Gayle? She offered to buy the wood dyna for $3K last night. I'd really rather not do it, since she will just put it on ebay for more money. I'd like to find a buyer that will really appreciate the drum, maybe someone with a matching kit. What would you do?
