Weird Chrome Polishing
I mentioned this on amother thread, but thought I should post these pics here. polished the chrome on this snare drum with a piece of aluminum foil (yes, from the kitchen), and a t-shirt. I'm not sure why this works, but I noticed no scratching at all (the foil is softer than the chrome).

Hey Marc,
That is great...I'm going to have to try that one. Have you found out any more about the snare?

Re: Wierd Chrome Polishing
Hi Jack. The snare drum is still anonymous. I haven't had a chance to get new heads for it yet. Also needs throw-off knob and muffler knob. The sound edges are dead flat, too. I may end up having an angle sculpted - but I'll wait to hear how it sounds before doind that.
Oh yeah -- I found that the dull side of the luminum foil works better than the shiny.

Re: Wierd Chrome Polishing
Explain exactly how you do that. The results are amazing!!! Do you just use a t-shirt to buff it out? Do you use any polish?

Re: Wierd Chrome Polishing
Hey Clutch. I don't use any polish or cleaning products on the chrome at all. What I is do is - First I wipe down the chrome with a cloth towel or t-shirt to get anything off that comes off easy. Then I get the roll of aluminum foil from the kitchen, and a beer. I then crack the beer, take a sip - and put on music or the TV.
Then I settle in to rub & scrub. I scrub of few inches of the chrome with the dull side of the aluminum foil, and immediately buff with the towel/t-shirt.
Also - you can mold the foil to get into small areas.
This technique was given to me this past weekend by a neighbor who is a metal sculpturist and architect. He says the foil is so much softer than the chrome that it will not scratch the chrome. I haven't noticed any scratches due to the foil -- but I still avoid bunching up the foil into too hard of a ball - just in case.
If you have the time - post before & after pics.
Marc

Re: Weird Chrome Polishing
Hi, newbie from the UK here. Currently restoring an incredibly dog-eared English Rogers. I also do up vintage BMX bikes and thought you guys might be interested in a process used in the BMX community for removing rust from chrome plated surfaces. Oxalic acid is sold as wood bleach and comes in crystal form or pre dissolved. Check out some of the examples in the first post....

Depending on the severity of the oxidation, soak the parts for 3 - 8 hours in the solution, periodically brushing with a toothbrush or similar. The results are pretty suprising!!
