Re: late 50s Classmate Snare
Put a wrap on there and the heads might not fit...
You did a nice job cleaning it up. That tone control was added later on...
I've had a couple of those, the worst part about them is those wire-wound snares - hard to get a good sound out of them. Also, if you try to tune it up high, those rims will bend like pretzels. This is a real low-end student snare, keep that in mind.
Most of them came in blue/silver or black/gold Duco, but I have seen a couple in a wrapped finish from the factory.

Re: late 50s Classmate Snare
Don't mess with that great duco finish. Take it to a guitar restorer or furniture restorer and have them touch up the major flaws. I wouldn't even mess with the small scratches. You did a great job on bringing it back to beauty. Nice drum my friend.

Re: late 50s Classmate Snare
thanks guys, I'm keeping the duco finish.
I'll have to keep my eyes open for a 13" 1950s Rogers snare head and bottom head, due to the fact that this guy wrote his name on the head a long time ago and its not coming off. Also the top head has lost the white coating over the years.
