Re: Nemo, a Trade?
Hey Frothgar,
Just an update. There are two possible scenarios for how I make the shield. I'll either do it when I get home Friday night (I probably won't camp Friday night), or I'll do it on Saturday in between fighting. College is 2.5 hours at least away from home, so I may not get home early enough after my classes end to finish DAPing the foam Friday night. I can't have a car so my parents have to drive out here and back to get me home. Trying to finish it Friday is the best option. If I can't, though, I'll bring all of the supplies with me to finish it on Saturday.
I just though of something: what if we had a weapons making demo to show what we're using? I could be working on the shield and other people could be working on weapons in between fighting and the audience can see how it's done.

Re: Nemo, a Trade?
thats fine, but take your time. id rather have it late and done right than have it rushed and shoddy.
put a notice on the taurendor board, about your idea. it would probably be a great thing to do during the down times.

Re: Nemo, a Trade?
Hey,
Sorry I couldn't make it to the Renn Faire. There's been a virus going around Gettysburg and I managed to catch it at just the right time to keep me from fighting. I got some work done on your shield, though. The core is bent and ready to be cut, and I've cut out a few of the pieces of foam. It turns out that you are almost exactly a foot taller than me, so instead of 4 feet tall, your shield will be five feet tall (actually, a little less because mine's a little less). That puts it at 30' in radius for the round part. Compared to me, you're a big guy. My shield reaches from chin to knees on me (4'), so it's the right proportions. The shield is about as tall as I am.
I will try to not get sick and finish it for the October battle.

Re: Nemo, a Trade?
Hooray! I'm not sick but I can't get a ride home this weekend. I certainly do love being a freshman with no car.
So, I'll try to get it ready for the next battle. I'll go check the schedule and start planning to head home. In any event, I'll have it finished for sure by the December battle, since I'm going home for a while for Thanksgiving. Hopefully I can finish it before then, but my plans never seem to work out.

Re: Nemo, a Trade?
Alright, I did get a ride home, but not until tomorrow, so I can't make it to the battle. I do, however, now have four days to finish your shield, so that shouldn't be a problem barring a major catastrophe.

Re: Nemo, a Trade?
Finally! Your shield is finished! It only took over a month and a few setbacks, but it's done.
Well, more or less. I've left a few things up to you. The bottom still comes to a point so you can shorten it however much you want. I left the handle unwrapped like you wanted. Also, you may or may not want to add foam to cover or edge the wood core and pvc core. This can be done easily with just duct tape since there won't be any stress on it and very little contact. The edges are also uneven due to the curve (because each layer is the same size, as you get farther from the core they cover less of the previous layer). Also, you may want to put some foam around the hole for the handle.
But don't think it's unfinished! It's still perfectly usable with a cover at this point. I've improved on my old design a bit, too. I mace the hole for the handle larger not only because your hands are larger than mine but because it will cut down on weight for the larger shield. I also carved the pvc so that it is now inset into the wood core. It is normal size in the handle area, but behind the core it goes down to half size, so the outside of the handle is flush with the outside of the core (outside meaning the part that faces you, since inside is the innards of the shield).
This gives much more room for your hand. On mine it goes: wood, hole in layer 1, handle in layer 2 and 3, hole in layer 4, solid layers 5 and 6. On yours it goes: handle on wood and layer 1, hole in layers 2, 3 and 4, solid layers 5 and 6. My hand can fit without even touching the foam on the outside (there is now 1.5 inches of space rather than .5 inches of space). Your hand shouldn't be too cramped.
My shield is about 8 inches longer than from my chin to my knees. At the moment, yours is a foot longer than from your chin to your knees. Of course, you have to shorten it in order for it to be safe. You can shorten it to only four inches longer with the core as it is. I built it to the same proportions as my shield, so I don't think you'll mind the extra length. If it is too long, you can still access the pvc. Just cut the pvc a little shorter and you can shorten the bottom a little more.
This shield, just from feeling it now, feels a whole lot better than my shield. Granted, it is so tall on me that the top of the shield is about at the level of my head. It is more solid than my shield. Nothing shakes on it. It is also a nice weight. It feels substantial but it is still maneuverable (or at least is should be for you).
I'll try to get some pics to you, but I can't guarantee anything with them (my dad has the camera and I'm going back to school as soon as he gets home).
Have you finished the helmet yet? How did it turn out? Any pictures?
