Ionatan MacMarcas: Knight Erroneous

Ionatan MacMarcas (literally Nathan son of Mark), Knight Erroneous of Acre

Ionatan's father, Marcas, is the son of an Irish archer. Marcas became caught in the in the religious fervor of the Third Crusade and joined the army of King Richard of England voluntarily, his excellent English and ambiguous alliances assisting greatly. The army landed at Acre, an old coastal Crusader stronghold in the hands of the Saracens, in 1190 and forced it to surrender by 1191. In the revelry and violence that followed, Marcas took a Saracen woman as his wife, and Ionatan was soon born. Marcas left the army, choosing instead to become a bowyer for Richard's forces.

Ionatan was dissatisfied with his life from the start. He spent much of his time away from his father's shop at the docks. By the grace of God he was given a lucky break in his eighteenth year. He witnessed an argument between an inn owner and a fresh Crusading knight in which the knight stormed off. Evidently he could not pay the innkeeper for he returned to his ship to stay the night. Once everyone was asleep, Ionatan sneaked onto the ship and slew the defenseless knight before he could wake up. Ionatan took his armor and was miles away from the city by dawn. He never saw his family again.

It took him months to find a Crusading army; not only were many rumors of its location wrong, but Ionatan had never left Acre, giving him no knowledge of the layout of the Holy Land. Once he entered the army, a knight challenged him. Ionatan traveled alone but with fine armor. Any true knight would bring with him at least a few men-at-arms, possibly more if his armor were so nice. They fought. It was Ionatan's first battle, and he nearly soiled himself before its end. God had destined Ionatan for much more, however, and Ionatan slew his foe, though not without pain. The knight had wielded a fine sword, the finest the Ionatan would ever see. Its gilt scabbard and hilt were decorated miraculously in the very same colors as Ionatan's stolen armor. This sword had damaged Ionatan's fine armor heavily in the left armpit and along the right sleeve and left him with deep scars. It was no matter, however, for Ionatan had earned his armor and the knight's fine sword, and had made a name for himself as a warrior among the Crusading forces.

He climbed the ranks in the army quickly. By the time he reached his twenty-fifth year he was an adviser to the general himself. He had personally battled Saladin on two occasions and had nearly bested him. On the second occasion, Saladin's respect for Ionatan, coupled with his partial Saracen heritage, was the only thing that kept him alive. Instead of being executed, he was held prisoner among the Saracen army for over a year before being ransomed. In this time he learned to speak the Saracen's language and learned their customs so that, when he was finally back among his own people, he was an even greater asset to them.

Eventually the religious zeal that held the army together dissipated and many of the other knights returned home. With those few who remained he created a mercenary army. The remaining forces held no religious values, so they took contracts from Christian and Saracen alike. Ionatan's natural ability and experience among the people of both faiths kept him alive for many years. He died of natural causes in 1263.

Yay! xp. . .just what I. . .wanted?

By the way, in case you didn't guess, this is the bio for my Alter Ego character which will be introduced tomorrow. I'm pretty excited about it. I tried to tie him in with history and Assassin's Creed. My armor is based on some crusader armor from that game.
