The Realm: Shayla, pease tell us about your latest release, DECADENT.

DECADENT is a contemporary erotic ménage romance, released by Berkley HEAT (October 2, 2007). If you read WICKED TIES and wanted to know more about Deke, this is all about him. Here’s a blurb:

The Realm: How did you come up with the idea for DECADENT?

I adore erotic romances about ménage relationships. Most focus on how the ménage unfolds, not why. After appearing in my first book, Wicked Ties, Deke compelled me to explore this fascinating question.

In DECADENT, the threesome hooks up for hugely different reasons: Kimber to get an education, Luc for a cause that will break your heart, and Deke because he just couldn’t say no to Kimber anymore. They join in combustive desire, melt the layers around one another’s’ hearts, and reveal their shocking secrets. Will they realize too late that what they want isn’t what they need?

DECADENT contains really hot sex, but it’s also a poignant romance with a happy ending. I hope readers will take this journey with me and give DECADENT a chance!

The Realm: What did you like best about your characters in this tale?

I love that they are all very different and very much themselves. Deke is a former soldier with a man’s-man mentality and a terrible past to hide. The way he speaks and acts totally reflects that. He was always my “cut-to-the-chase” character who told it exactly as it was, ugly or not. Luc is a famous chef, a southern gentleman, a sensualist with a dark side he doesn’t want anyone to know about. I loved the way he appeared to be one person…but someone totally different lurked under the surface. He just gave me layers and layers to work with. Kimber starts the book as an innocent woman, too young to know that what’s she’s after isn’t good for her. As the book progresses, she really blooms in the face of heartache, adversity, danger and incredibly decadent sex. She went from a girl to a woman, and I love the headstrong, gritty woman she became. Believe me, when this trio comes together, their lives are forever changed.

The Realm: You did an amazing job of thoroughly mapping the emotions involved in such relationships. What did you enjoy most about writing this story?

Almost everything. I loved writing the emotions, but their interactions just flowed. Their conversations, their sex, their fights. It was a dynamic that just clicked for me. Because everyone had such a stake in this relationship and wanted such different things out of it, I had plenty of story to put down on the page.

The Realm: Tell us about your current work in progress.

My first paranormal romance for Pocket Books called TEMPT ME WITH DARKNESS. It will hit shelves September 2008. I’m hoping it will be the first in a series of books about a magical warrior society called the Doomsday Brethren. I’ve got a placeholder site for these books at www.doomsdaybrethren.com. Come by and take a peek! I’m very excited about this book. It’s a dark, sometimes funny look at a world that’s adult Harry Potter meets Heroes with a whole lotta sexy going on. I’m having such a blast with this group of magical British bad boys!

The Realm: How has your writer career changed since you started out?

It’s now 20+ books strong, and I’ve written historicals, contemporaries, erotics, paranormals for 5 publishers! I’m thrilled at the doors that have opened for me and the readers who keep sending me emails. I started in a small imprint for Kensington and have worked my way through multiple genres, multiple formats and multiple houses. Everything that’s happening for me now is so exciting, and I am loving every minute of the ride.

The Realm: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

I want to keep writing books I love and giving readers experiences they enjoy. I’d like to publish more and make a few lists, but at the end of the day, it’s all about doing what you love for readers who love it, too.

The Realm: What do you enjoy reading?

Anything sexy with an interesting premise and an alpha male. I read just about anything in romance, but most of what I read falls into that descriptions, regardless of genre or format. I love Lora Leigh and JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. I miss Dara Joy’s books, love Lara Adrian’s new series, read the heck out of Sylvia Day, Rhyannon Byrd and Jaci Burton every chance I get.

The Realm: What can readers look forward to from you in the near future?

I’ll be releasing a few e-books between DECADENT and TEMPT ME WITH DARKNESS, since there’s 11 months in-between. I will be finishing a Shayla Black m/f/m ménage book for Ellora’s Cave that I hope will be a 2008 release called DANGEROUS BOYS AND THEIR TOY. Samhain will release a fun, sexy Shelley Bradley contemporary romance in summer 2008 called A PERFECT MATCH. Also for Samhain, I’m working on a sequel to NAUGHTY LITTLE SECRET called DANGEROUS LITTLE SECRET. The print version of Watch Me will be packaged with Jaci Burton’s Show Me into an anthology called SNEAK PEEK, which should release either next summer or fall. I’m keeping busy!
