We're sad to say that due to schedules and work loads we've decided to close The Realm. However, if you would like an awesome community of writers to chat with and get to know check out the Romane Divas at www.romancedivas.com. They have tons to offer and a huge group of amazing writers! We will be moving some of the information we've put on the forum to our MySpace page, so if you want to keep up with us, check out our blog there. We'll be blogging there in addition to our personal blogs from now on. Thanks for hanging out with us. We hope to see you on the Web!

INTERVIEW WITH SMART, SEXY, AND FUN CATHRYN FOX

Join us as we learn what's inside the mind of Cathryn Fox. She will be answering our questions sometime in the week of July 23rd, so get them posted now and I'll make sure she sees them.

She has teamed up with Sylvia Day for an anthology SPELLBOUND: MAGIC & MAYHEM. What more can you ask for than two talented authors putting their stories in one place?

Not much, but I'm sure we can think of something!

INTERVIEW WITH SMART, SEXY, AND FUN CATHRYN FOX

The Realm: You have a story on your website about a note from your daughter that you’ve stuck to your monitor about never giving up. How big of a role did that simple note play in your continuing motivation to never give up when things got tough?

CF: I have always said to my kids, anything worth having is worth fighting for. I’ve always tried to teach them to keep going, even if things get tough. They’ve watched me struggle with my writing over the years, they’ve seen me cry, and they’ve seen me cheer, but they’ve never seen me quit. Allison wrote that note when I was having a very bad day. It made me realize how much of a positive impact my self-discipline and ambition has had on them. And now, on those frustrating days, I glance up at that note and it makes me smile.

The Realm: How much time would you guess goes into one of your books? And do you pre-plot or let things roll as you’re writing?

CF: I do pre-plot and give my editor and outline before I begin, but sometimes the story takes off in a different direction. The story I’m working on now for instance, it just went off in a different direction than I had planned. Different, but better, so I’m going with it. Sometimes things sound good in a synopsis, but when it comes right down to writing it, it doesn’t quite work.

I work full time and aim for 5 pages a day. Sometimes I struggle to do two, sometimes I whip off 15. So for a novella, 25,000 words, it takes approximately four to six weeks, for a full 75,000 word book, three-four months. This of course, does not account for plotting time, or all the editing after the first draft is written.

The Realm: You’ve listed on your site some resource books for people learning to write. Of the titles you listed, one jumped out at me. The Joy of Writing Sex by Elizabeth Benedict. I’ve met several writers who choose to write books where the sex is left behind the door, because they just are not comfortable writing a sex scene that may be read by someone they know. What advice would you give someone struggling with that?

CF: If you’re not comfortable writing hot sex, don’t do it because it will show in your work. There are lots of lines looking for books without hot sex, and you can always concentrate on the emotional connections made instead of focusing on the physical. I do understand how people feel though, worried what their mother, or mother-in-law will think. This can make things very uncomfortable for them. My mother in law is an avid romance reader, but I told her right from the beginning that my stories weren’t for her and would make her uncomfortable so I didn’t want her to read it. It has never been brought up again.

Personally, I enjoy writing about hot sex, but I do write under a pen name for a reason. I know my husband wouldn’t feel very comfortable at work knowing the men were reading my novels. We keep my pen name pretty hush hush in our small community. Even my children don’t give it out. When parents of my kids friends find out (and they do!) and asked my children, my kids say, you’ll have to check with mom on that one.

The Realm: You enjoy writing paranormals because of the freedom they give you. Other than that, what is your favorite part of the writing process?

CF: I love the magic that happens when writing. Sometimes you write something and aren’t really sure why, but then later in the story you realize how much of an impact it has had on the story.

The Realm: Being a writer is such a solitary career, and a lot of writers say that suits them since they are not huge people persons or that they are shy. Do you generally find the solitude to be a blessing, or a curse?

CF: I am actually a huge people person. I love being around other people, laughing and hanging out. But this job isn’t solitary for me. I’m with people (my characters) all day long. And when I leave the office for the day, those people stay with me all night, even when I don’t want them to!!

The Realm: Having just returned from RWA National Conference, I heard a lot of people talking about contests and their worth. How do you feel about them? Do you have any advice for people considering entering them?

CF: I know people who have sold from contests and I know people who’ve pretty much quit writing from harsh contest comments. I say treat the comments like a buffet, take what you want and leave the rest.

The Realm: You recently made a new sale to NAL. Can you tell us about that project?

CF: Yes!! I’m excited about my new contract. The story is called The ‘O’ Spa, Oasis of Pleasure, BUT that title will be changing. I think this is a little different than my normal light contemporaries. It’s about men who’ve been injured overseas and the women who help heal them. I think the sex scenes are more intense, more about healing through erotic touch.

The Realm: You have a new book Spellbound: Magic and Mayhem coming out that you worked on with Sylvia Day. Can you tell us about the process of working with other authors on anthologies?

CF: I really enjoy working with other authors and the talented Sylvia was so much fun to work with. We came up with this fun sexy story for Avon and it was amazing how effortlessly we put it together, especially considering we alternated chapters, and overlapped story lines.

The Realm: What do you see for yourself next, either personally or career oriented?

CF: I’m hoping to grow my erotic romance career and I’m also hoping to work on some Urban Fantasies. On the personal front I have a son going into high school, and I’m sure that will bring on all kinds of fun new parenting challenges.

Spellbound: Magic and Mayhem releases July 24, 2007. A complete list of books by Cathryn can be found at www.cathrynfox.com.

Magic and Mayhem was such a great book. I can't remember if I did a review for it. I need to check.

Loved it though.
