Re: PET FOOD RECALL
I have to put in my two cents since I work at a vet's office. We've been bombarded with calls from clients concerned and have informed all that if they feel their pet might have eaten the contaminated food, they need to KEEP the food and get their pets' urine and blood tested to check for kidney/liver abnormalities.
Unfortunately, a link off of the mentioned website harshly criticizes the top food brands because SOME of their foods were included in the recall. We don't tell our clients to feed one brand over another as each pet tolerates different types of food and almost all brands of food, we feel, are nutrionally sound for our clients' pets. We were extremely shocked to hear about the recall on Hills Prescription Diet m/D dry as no other dry foods have been recalled (to date). People to need to also realize that while having your name well known and recognized helps when you are trying to compete in a specialized market (ie pet foods), it's also a bad thing to have such a recognized name as if ANYTHING happens that causes 'concern' amongst your clients, you are immediately frowned upon. I can almost guarantee that if the top brands hadn't been part of this recall and it had just been limited to store brands, the media hype wouldn't be so outrageously jaded against these companies. Instead of blaming the top brand named companies, why aren't we focusing our attention on the most important matter here.... how did this substance get into the food in the first place?!
Of all the pets that we have seen that might have eaten some of the recalled food, only 1 patient has died who had no known renal failure history, but who's sole diet was a generic brand, not one of the top named brands. I don't have exactly numbers, but fewer than 5 have been admitted for having kidney function compromised to warrent fluids.
I did a random blood sampling on 1 of my cats and my dog and found that both had elevated kidney/liver values. Suprisingly, my cat (who's only 3), has never eaten any of the recalled food. My dog, however, has elevated values, but he's also on a pain reliever year round due to his arthritis which can cause problems if not monitored regularly.

Re: PET FOOD RECALL
Thank you, you have some very good points there, it's good to hear from someone who works in a vets office. Good advice about keeping the food too.
I am thankful that none of the food I feed my cats was part of the recall. So far, no one that I know personally has any pets affected by this either.
