Book: Falling Angels
Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier
I really enjoyed this book. It takes place in England, from 1901-1910, following the lives of two very different girls who become friends. Maude's mother Kitty is considered a "free thinker" for those times, unhappy with the roles imposed on women before they were given the right to vote. Lavina's mother Gertrude is happy to be a wife and mother, sticking to what society expected in those days.
Neither mother likes it very much at first that the two girls have become friends.
The story is told from different points of view from the main characters, and other people whose lives are affected by the events as they unfold. I really liked reading the different viewpoints, and of the secrets they kept, sometimes unsuccessfully, from each other.
The story begins when Maude and Lavina are 5 years old, when they meet for the first time, and ends when they are about 14 or 15. I would love to see a sequel to this book to learn about what their lives are like when they are adults.
