Playmobil
My wife Donna and I collect Playmobil, a German designed and manufactured toy, which was first produced in 1974 by company Geobra Brandstatter.
My wife had been collecting before I met her. She was a childhood collector.
It was most popular in European countries, specifically Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Greece, Spain and Italy. It is now sold worldwide.
For more information on Playmobil visit www.playmobil.com
The themes we collect are: Knights, Pirates, Romans, Vikings, Fairies, Magic, Circus, Fairytale castle, Victorian and Victorian Dollhouse, Modern Dollhouse and all accessories, several advent calendars and religious sets (Nativity scene with 3 kings, Noahs Ark), Playmobil Train which is a sub-collectors group on its own(we have three trainsets, additional carriages, stations and tracks), we have lately been getting a lot of the Playmobil "special" figure sets.
The Playmobil sets are totally interchangable with Sylvanian Families, all being of the same scale. Therefore, we use our Playmobil and S/F figures and sets interchangably.
Biggest Playmobil want: The new Egyptian set coming out in August 2008 from Germany. Then another theme will have been added! I love the new Egyptian pyramid, temple and sphinx.
Of all of the toys I have seen produced, the new Playmobil Egyptian range is the most SPECTACULAR toy range I have ever seen. Sorry SF but the pyramids get my vote for 2008..... I am waiting for your new UK fair range this year to compare though ....
We also both want to collect the Zoo theme, although we have the "Noahs Ark" and the Water Funpark theme. I am also looking at purchasing the Dinosaurs. I purchase from Karl-Hermann Hipp direct from Germany, to save heaps of $$$$ and it works out I pay 1/2 the price of retail. Even with shipping added.
My biggest dream is to visit the Playmobil Funpark in France or Germany and come home with a huge stash of goodies....
I have enquired into purchasing a life-size Playmobil pirate and you can now source them for your own house!

Re: Playmobil
I collect, too! Not quite with the same passion I did a few years ago, but I still collect the pirates. There was a time I wanted -everything- from every theme. *laughs* When I moved to Hawai'i, I sold the bulk of my Playmo collection. I kept my pirates and my Wild West theme items, but pretty much everything else went.
(I also did keep several police/thief items - one of my favorite sets of all time is one with two thiefs cracking open a safe with a blowtorch.)
I've always appreciated the fact that, because the sets are made in Europe, they contain items that they wouldn't if they were made in the overly sanitized USA. For example, Geobra isn't shy about including alcohol. The large frothing mugs of foamy beer found in at least one of the catapult sets from a few years ago are my favorite 'non-PC' inclusion (as is the picture on the box - the guys are clearly too drunk to be able to man their stations.) The Wild West saloon is another of my favorite very non PC items.
