Making a Sylvanian Village
This subject was brought up on another thread, which sort of hi-jacked it, I'm afraid. I thought it would be a better idea to create a new thread for people to talk about displaying their collection.
I'll start with three photos of my most of my major buildings on the floor of our walk-out basement studio. The green tape you see on the floor in some of the photos mark off a space of 4' by 12'. And, yes, that's the Grand Hotel way at the back of the photos
My daughter and her husband will be stopping over tonight to see if they can use the Ikea cabinets at the back of the room. If so, and if other considerations are met, I can go ahead with my Village! Plus, I can extend it to the back wall to make it 14' long, which will give the buildings more space around them.
I'm actually quite excited about putting together the Village now that I see all the buildings out. The photos don't do the space justice. Imagine, too, that the Village will be on top of several 30" high Ikea storage cabinets, encased in removable Plexiglas panels, and lit from above by daylight fluorescents. I don't know how high the the Plexiglas will go, but I'm hoping another 36" or so above the storage cabinets. That will give me room to vary the height of some of the buildings.

OH WOW This is FAABBUULLOOOUSSSS......
Its so awesome to be able to see other peoples collections! It makes me feel like I am not alone in my total passion for all things SF.
Wow - lots of buildings, will you be slowly adding in the little Sylvanians too?
How did you manage to upload your photos? I have tried to upload some photos, but the website does not give me the option!
This is a GREAT thread!

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
My daughter and her husband were over last night for a look at the cabinets. Sounds like they have a lot of discussing to do before they decide if they have room.
My husband and I also need to talk extensively about this whole thing before we can proceed. He'll be doing construction for the Village, and I'm not sure he's all that keen on spending vast amounts of time on my Village at the moment. We talked a lot about it last night and laid the foundation for future discussions.
One of the ideas he had was if the Village went 14' right up to the back wall, we might as well make it go across the back wall to make a "T" shape. Brilliant idea! I could use some of that area for "mountains" and for a great camping scene and for giving more space around each house and shop.

If we go ahead with the project, all of the buildings you see and Sylvanian figures and accessories in the storage cabinets will have to be removed from the room. I have no idea where they will be stored during the construction stage, unless some of it can go into the 30" high Ikea cabinets once they're set up.
What I generally do with my buildings is decide what furniture and accessories go into the building, then stick down everything with removable "sticky tack" stuff. That way when I move buildings around, every piece of furniture and tiny things like cutlery all stay in place. I DO NOT use "sticky tack" for figures because it will remove their fur.

It's easy for me to upload photos to my posts because I take them off my website. You can see these and other photos on my Blog page. Since the last in-the-cabinet photo was taken, I've added more buildings and the shelves have been rearranged to accomodate them.

Dang Beverly, Have I created a monster? I feel quite responsible for your newest obsession. However, I am looking forward to seeing how you organize your Village. I hope that you have a great time working on it.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
Julia,
I don't think you are to blame. You've been a great inspiration, though
We still do not know if my daughter and son-in-law will take any of the cabinets. We'll find out within the next few days.
Before anything gets built in my studio, my husband has to set up his workshop in the garage. Because we live in a showbound northern city, road sand accumulates where the car is parked. I cleaned the garage floor yesterday to give him a good start. Last evening, he piled up a bunch of stuff we no longer need, and on Saturday he's going to get rid of it. Our garage is drywalled except for the wall he needs behind his workbench, so he's got to frame it and put in electricity before making the workbench. He's got Monday off, so maybe by the end of the weekend, he'll have everything done except the workbench.
I've still got my Village temporarily set up on the floor. The buildings are really crammed into the 4' by 12' area, which will make it pretty difficult to set up my camera to take shots of the centre street scenes. This afternoon, I hope to remove the buildings that I think will be relocated along the wall in the "T" area to give me a better idea of how the rest of the buildings will look.
I've been looking at all kinds of train-related sites online for ideas on how to secnery and terrain. The cost of trees alone is a killer!
Will keep you all updated with new pics as the thing progresses. Or if it doesn't progress, I'll post that as well.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
When I set up my Village the first time in my husband's study, I was cramped for space as well. I am excited that I now have a whole room to use for the setup. It should house my collection with no problems, if I arrange it right. Unlike you Beverly, I have no real purpose in mind for my Village. I am going to construct it just for the play value alone. Even at 47 I am still very much a kid at heart. I started imagining doing this when I saw the pictures that were taken for the Sylvanian Families Online Store of the different buildings, playsets, etc. I loved the different types of landscaping that was shown in the photos. Needless to say, my imagination went wild. It was then that I decided that I wanted to do the same thing with my Village. I have loads of ideas in my head of what I want. It's just figuring out how to do it that has me stumped. As you stated before, it is a great undertaking. I am truly impressed with the progress you have already made towards constructing your Village and truly hope that it works out where you are able to continue. As soon as I am able, I will post some pictures of my collection as you have requested. However, at this time I am completely overwhelmed by other matters so it will probably be a while before I can actually get to it. In the meantime, keep your pictures coming.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
Here is a photo of my first display table and Plexiglas cover. For more information on the table and what you see on it, visit my Blog page.
I set up the table in a rush this morning for what I think is its last photo session. The photo has been uploaded along with description and price to a local buy/sell site. Hope it sells.
Husband is currently putting up fluorescent lights in the garage as the beginning phase of his workshop. He seems to be onboard with the idea of the Sylvanian Village, which is fantastic Daughter and son-in-law are going to measure various spaces in their apartment to see how many of the three Ikea storage units they can use. They will know by Monday how many they'll take. Friday has already been set as the pick up day for the cabinets.
And me? Oh, I'm trying hard not to hyperventilate over the prospect of designing and executing this huge project. I estimate the "T" version of the Village will give me 86 square feet of space I know, I know - just relax! Rome wasn't built in a day.
The most immediate problem is where to store the collection, dust free, while the basic construction goes on in the studio. Even though we'll have eight 40" wide by 24" deep by 30" high cabinets used as the base of the structure, there's going to be drilling and sawdust and all kinds of construction detritus spilling onto and around them. I'm thinking storing as much stuff under the stairs and covering with old sheets would be better that putting stuff in the cabinets during construction.
And because I'm going to be using the centre aisle as a place for a camera and lights, I don't think I'm going to be able to landscape as delicately as I initially thought. Maybe that's for the best because it will be cheaper to landscape minimally.
Yup, that's the big news. I will have my Village! And, no, my husband does not have and does not want to get a Godzilla I think he secretly likes my CC/SF figures quite a bit. Of my recent acquisitions, he really liked Mother Blackberry with her black tipped ears.
