"‘Tonight, in the city of David, a Savior is born, 'tis Christ the Lord.'"

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is, of course, quite a different thing."
-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Placating terrorists, meeting with dictators, compassion for murderers... but no humanity for the unborn... incredible.

Morning and Night Prayers for Wednesday, August 15

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

Begin with the Dual Prayer (Our Father and Hail Mary).

Then, the Invitatory Psalm:

Make the Sign of the Cross on the lips at the words "O Lord, open my lips."

O Lord, open my lips.

And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Come, let us worship the King of kings, for today his Virgin Mother was taken up to heaven.

Sing joyfully to God, all the earth:
serve ye the Lord with gladness.
Come in before his presence with exceeding great joy.

Come, let us worship the King of kings, for today his Virgin Mother was taken up to heaven.

Know ye that the Lord he is God:
he made us, and not we ourselves.
We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Come, let us worship the King of kings, for today his Virgin Mother was taken up to heaven.

Go ye into his gates with praise,
into his courts with hymns:
and give glory to him.
Praise ye his name:
For the Lord is sweet,
his mercy endureth for ever,
and his truth to generation and generation.

Come, let us worship the King of kings, for today his Virgin Mother was taken up to heaven.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 62 (63)

Thirsting for God

O God, my God,
to thee do I watch at break of day.
For thee my soul hath thirsted;
for thee my flesh, O how many ways!
In a desert land, and where there is no way, and no water:
so in the sanctuary have I come before thee,
to see thy power and thy glory.
For thy mercy is better than lives:
thee my lips shall praise.

Thus will I bless thee all my life long:
and in thy name I will lift up my hands.
Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness:
and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips.
If I have remembered thee upon my bed,
I will meditate on thee in the morning:
Because thou hast been my helper.
And I will rejoice under the covert of thy wings:

My soul hath stuck close to thee:
thy right hand hath received me.

But they have sought my soul in vain,
they shall go into the lower parts of the earth:
They shall be delivered into the hands of the sword,
they shall be the portions of foxes.

But the king shall rejoice in God,
all they shall be praised that swear by him:
because the mouth is stopped of them that speak wicked things.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Wednesday, August 15

Psalm 149

The saints rejoice

Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle:
let his praise be in the church of the saints.
Let Israel rejoice in him that made him:
and let the children of Sion be joyful in their king.
Let them praise his name in choir:
let them sing to him with the timbrel and the psaltery.
For the Lord is well pleased with his people:
and he will exalt the meek unto salvation.

The saints shall rejoice in glory:
they shall be joyful in their beds.
The high praise of God shall be in their mouth:
and two-edged swords in their hands:
To execute vengeance upon the nations,
chastisements among the people:
To bind their kings with fetters,
and their nobles with manacles of iron.
To execute upon them the judgment that is written:
this glory is to all his saints.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short Reading

Isaiah 61:10

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, and my soul shall be joyful in my God: for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation: and with the robe of justice he hath covered me, as a bridegroom decked with a crown, and as a bride adorned with her jewels.

Canticle

Benedictus

The Messiah and his forerunner

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "Blessed be the Lord…"

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament, The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us, That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear, In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions

Our Saviour deigned to be born of the Virgin Mary. Let us give him worship and turn to him in prayer:
    - Remember Mary, full of grace, and hear our prayers.
Eternal Word, you chose Mary as your incorruptible dwelling-place on earth:
free us from the corruption of sin.
Our Redeemer, you made the Virgin Mary a pure habitation for you and a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit:
make us an everlasting temple of your Spirit.
King of kings, by your will your mother was taken up into heaven, body and soul:
keep our minds always on heavenly things.
Lord of heaven and earth, you brought Mary to stand at your right hand:
grant that we may deserve to share her glory.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

Almighty and ever-living God, you welcomed the immaculate Virgin Mary, the Mother of your Son, into heaven, body and soul.
Grant that we may constantly keep our eyes on heavenly things,
and come to deserve a share in her glory.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "May the Lord bless us…"

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Wednesday, August 15

Compline (Night Prayer)

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “ O God…”.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience.

Penitential Rite

I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Psalm 30 (31)

Trustful prayer in time of adversity

O God, protect me; be my refuge.

In thee, O Lord, have I hoped,
let me never be confounded:
deliver me in thy justice.
Bow down thy ear to me:
make haste to deliver me.
Be thou unto me a God, a protector,
and a house of refuge, to save me.

For thou art my strength and my refuge;
and for thy name's sake thou wilt lead me,
and nourish me.
Thou wilt bring me out of this snare,
which they have hidden for me:
for thou art my protector.

Into thy hands I commend my spirit:
thou hast redeemed me,
O Lord, the God of truth.

Thou hast hated them that regard vanities, to no purpose.
But I have hoped in the Lord:
I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy.
For thou best regarded my humility,
thou hast saved my soul out of distresses.
And thou hast not shut me up in the hands of the enemy:
thou hast set my feet in a spacious place.

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am afflicted:
my eye is troubled with wrath, my soul, and my belly:
For my life is wasted with grief:
and my years in sighs.
My strength is weakened through poverty
and my bones are disturbed.

I am become a reproach among all my enemies,
and very much to my neighbours;
and a fear to my acquaintance.
They that saw me without fled from me.
I am forgotten as one dead from the heart.
I am become as a vessel that is destroyed.
For I have heard the blame of many that dwell round about.
While they assembled together against me,
they consulted to take away my life.

But I have put my trust in thee, O Lord:
I said: Thou art my God.
My lots are in thy hands.
Deliver me out of the hands of my enemies;
and from them that persecute me.

Make thy face to shine upon thy servant;
save me in thy mercy.
Let me not be confounded, O Lord,
for I have called upon thee.
Let the wicked be ashamed,
and be brought down to hell.
Let deceitful lips be made dumb.
Which speak iniquity against the just,
with pride and abuse.

O how great is the multitude of thy sweetness, O Lord,
which thou hast hidden for them that fear thee!
Which thou hast wrought for them that hope in thee,
in the sight of the sons of men.

Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy face,
from the disturbance of men.
Thou shalt protect them in thy tabernacle
from the contradiction of tongues.
Blessed be the Lord,
for he hath shewn his wonderful mercy to me in a fortified city.

But I said in the excess of my mind:
I am cast away from before thy eyes.
Therefore thou hast heard the voice of my prayer,
when I cried to thee.
O love the Lord, all ye his saints:
for the Lord will require truth,
and will repay them abundantly that act proudly.
Do ye manfully, and let your heart be strengthened,
all ye that hope in the Lord.

O God, protect me; be my refuge.

Psalm 129 (130)

Out of the depths

Out of the depths I have cried to you, Lord.

Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let thy ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall stand it.
For with thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and by reason of thy law,
I have waited for thee, O Lord.
My soul hath relied on his word:
My soul hath hoped in the Lord.

From the morning watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.
Because with the Lord there is mercy:
and with him plentiful redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Out of the depths I have cried to you, Lord.

Reading

Ephesians 4:26-27

Be angry, and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your anger. Give not place to the devil.

Short Responsory

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Make the Sign of Cross at the words “Now thou dost...”

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord,
according to thy word in peace;
Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
A light to the revelation of the Gentiles,
and the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus Christ, you lay a gentle yoke upon those who follow you. Meek and humble, you give them a light burden to carry. Receive the work and the prayers we have offered to you today; and give us rest, to make us more eager to serve you, who live and reign for ever and ever, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

A M E N

Final Antiphon

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To you do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.
O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

End with the Triple Prayer: Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles Creed.
