"‘Tonight, in the city of David, a Savior is born, 'tis Christ the Lord.'"

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is, of course, quite a different thing."
-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Placating terrorists, meeting with dictators, compassion for murderers... but no humanity for the unborn... incredible.

Morning and Night Prayers for Sunday, August 19

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

Begin with the Dual Prayer (Our Father and Hail Mary).

Then, the Invitatory Psalm:

Make the Sign of the Cross on the lips at the words "O Lord, open my lips."

O Lord, open my lips.

And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

We are God’s people, the sheep of his flock: come, let us worship him, alleluia.

Sing joyfully to God, all the earth:
serve ye the Lord with gladness.
Come in before his presence with exceeding great joy.

We are God’s people, the sheep of his flock: come, let us worship him, alleluia.

Know ye that the Lord he is God:
he made us, and not we ourselves.
We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

We are God’s people, the sheep of his flock: come, let us worship him, alleluia.

Go ye into his gates with praise,
into his courts with hymns:
and give glory to him.
Praise ye his name:
For the Lord is sweet,
his mercy endureth for ever,
and his truth to generation and generation.

We are God’s people, the sheep of his flock: come, let us worship him, alleluia.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 117 (118)

A cry of rejoicing and triumph

Give praise to Lord, for he is good:
for his mercy endureth for ever.

Let Israel now say that he is good:
that his mercy endureth for ever.
Let the house of Aaron now say,
that his mercy endureth for ever.
Let them that fear the Lord now say,
that his mercy endureth for ever.

In my trouble I called upon the Lord:
and the Lord heard me, and enlarged me.
The Lord is my helper,
I will not fear what man can do unto me.
The Lord is my helper:
and I will look over my enemies.

It is good to confide in the Lord,
rather than to have confidence in man.
It is good to trust in the Lord,
rather than to trust in princes.

All nations compassed me about;
and in the name of the Lord I have been revenged on them.
Surrounding me they compassed me about:
and in the name of the Lord I have been revenged on them.
They surrounded me like bees,
and they burned like fire among thorns:
and in the name of the Lord I was revenged on them.
Being pushed I was overturned that I might fall:
but the Lord supported me.
The Lord is my strength and my praise:
and he is become my salvation.

The voice of rejoicing and of salvation
is in the tabernacles of the just.
The right hand of the Lord hath wrought strength:
the right hand of the Lord hath exulted me:
the right hand of the Lord hath wrought strength.

I shall not die, but live:
and shall declare the works of the Lord.
The Lord chastising hath chastised me:
but he hath not delivered me over to death.
Open ye to me the gates of justice:
I will go into them, and give praise to the Lord.

This is the gate of the Lord,
the just shall enter into it.

I will give glory to thee because thou hast heard me:
and art become my salvation.

The stone which the builders rejected;
the same is become the head of the corner.
This is the Lord's doing:
and it is wonderful in our eyes.
This is the day which the Lord hath made:
let us be glad and rejoice therein.

O Lord, save me:
O Lord, give good success.

Blessed be he that cometh in the name Lord.
We have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.

The Lord is God, and he hath shone upon us.
Appoint a solemn day, with shady boughs,
even to the horn of the alter.

Thou art my God, and I will praise thee:
thou art my God, and I will exalt thee.

I will praise thee, because thou hast heard me,
and art become my salvation.

O praise ye the Lord, for he is good:
for his mercy endureth for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle

Daniel 3

All creatures, bless the Lord

Blessed art thou, O Lord the God of our fathers:
and worthy to be praised, and glorified, and exalted above all for ever:
and blessed is the holy name of thy glory:
and worthy to be praised, and exalted above all in all ages.
Blessed art thou in the holy temple of thy glory:
and exceedingly to be praised, and exceeding glorious for ever.
Blessed art thou on the throne of thy kingdom,
and exceedingly to be praised, and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou, that beholdest the depths, and sittest upon the cherubims:
and worthy to be praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven:
and worthy of praise, and glorious for ever.
All ye works of the Lord, bless the Lord:
praise and exalt him above all for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 150

Praise the Lord

Praise ye the Lord in his holy places:
praise ye him in the firmament of his power.
Praise ye him for his mighty acts:
praise ye him according to the multitude of his greatness.

Praise him with sound of trumpet:
praise him with psaltery and harp.
Praise him with timbrel and choir:
praise him with strings and organs.
Praise him on high sounding cymbals:
praise him on cymbals of joy.

Let every spirit praise the Lord.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short Reading

2 Timothy 2:8 - 13

Be mindful that the Lord Jesus Christ is risen again from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel. Wherein I labour even unto bands, as an evildoer; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation, which is in Christ Jesus, with heavenly glory.

A faithful saying:

For if we be dead with him, we shall live also with him.
If we suffer, we shall also reign with him.
If we deny him, he will also deny us.
If we believe not, he continueth faithful,
he can not deny himself.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "Blessed be the Lord…"

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament, The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us, That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear, In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions

Our God is a God of power and goodness, who loves us and knows our souls. We praise him with joyful hearts:
    - We praise you, Lord, and we trust in you.
We bless you, almighty God, King of all things. We are in the wrong; we have sinned; but you have called us
to know your truth and serve you in your greatness.
God, you chose to open wide the doors of your compassion:
do not let us stray from the path of true life.
As we celebrate the resurrection of your beloved Son,
let us spend this day in spiritual rejoicing.
Lord, give your faithful a spirit of prayer and praise,
and let us always give you thanks.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

O God, no-one has ever seen gifts like those you have prepared for your loving servants.
Fill our hearts with your love; may we love and serve you in all things and above all things,
and receive from you gifts that surpass all our desires.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "May the Lord bless us…"

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Sunday, August 19

Compline (Night Prayer)

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “O God…”

O God, come to my aid.

O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience.

Penitential Rite

I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Psalm 90 (91)

The protection of the Most High

He will shade you with his wings; you will not fear the terror of the night.

He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High,
shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob.
He shall say to the Lord:
Thou art my protector, and my refuge:
my God, in him will I trust.

For he hath delivered me from the snare of the hunters:
and from the sharp word.
He will overshadow thee with his shoulders:
and under his wings thou shalt trust.
His truth shall compass thee with a shield:
thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night.
Of the arrow that flieth in the day,
of the business that walketh about in the dark:
Of invasion, or of the noonday devil.

A thousand shall fall at thy side,
and ten thousand at thy right hand:
but it shall not come nigh thee.
But thou shalt consider with thy eyes:
and shalt see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou, O Lord, art my hope:
thou hast made the most High thy refuge.
There shall no evil come to thee:
nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling.
For he hath given his angels charge over thee;
to keep thee in all thy ways.

In their hands they shall bear thee up:
lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk:
and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon.

Because he hoped in me I will deliver him:
I will protect him because he hath known my name.
He shall cry to me, and I will hear him:
I am with him in tribulation,
I will deliver him, and I will glorify him.
I will fill him with length of days;
and I will shew him my salvation.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

He will shade you with his wings; you will not fear the terror of the night.

Reading

Apocalypse 22:4-5

And they shall see his face: and his name shall be on their foreheads. And night shall be no more: and they shall not need the light of the lamp, nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God shall enlighten them, and they shall reign for ever and ever.

Short Responsory

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “Now thou dost…”.

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord,
according to thy word in peace;
Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
A light to the revelation of the Gentiles,
and the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer

Let us pray.

Today we have celebrated the mystery of the Christ’s resurrection, and so now we humbly ask you, Lord, that we may rest in your peace, far from all harm, and rise rejoicing and giving praise to you.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Final Antiphon

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
Our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve,
To thee do we send up our sighs,
Mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
And after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

End with the Triple Prayer: Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles Creed.
