SHJIHM :: Passion of The Christ :: Apocalypto ~ Runboard
"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is, of course, quite a different thing." -Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Placating terrorists, meeting with dictators, compassion for murderers... but no humanity for the unborn... incredible.

Re: Apocalypto Things will probably get very bad, Ad. I am not holding on to life too tightly. My point was that I am not averse to violence like you seem to imply. It occurred to me that perhaps some of the images in the film would not have the same effect when seen on a small screen like a computer compared to larger than life in a theater.
Apocalypto "Things will probably get very bad, Ad."
Ok ,and the RCC is doing what ? You see , the orthodox are forging in E Europe and Russia an alliance with the secular state , for mutual benefits . Of course , there are downsides - such as xenophobia and less free speech , but the bottom line is that the society there will go on without the PC - and perhaps destruction will be avoided for them .
"My point was that I am not averse to violence like you seem to imply."
I was not implying that actually - I was suspecting only that you have a sheltered life in a remote midwestern area , without crime and so on .
Re: Apocalypto I am leery of conversations like this because Europeans almost always have a very unrealistic view of life in America. They watch American TV and movies and follow the European media and come away with the impression that America is mostly shootouts and car chases. Granted life here is no longer Ozzie and Harriet or Leave it to Beaver but it simply is not what you might think. I do not live in the right suburb, I live in a suburb. There are inner city neighborhoods which are primarily minority which have high crime rates but they tend to be localized. There are some cities that are bad, like Miami, Houston, LA, or Chicago but they tend to have very large minority and immigrant populations. The middle class does not usually see the crime. What shootings there are are usually among the criminal element.
We are simply different - but the arrival of minorities who understand only violence will push us in the same corner . Europeans seem to be unable to understand the american fascination towards firearms - but as the european society grows more violent , that will change as well .
"The middle class does not usually see the crime. "
Same with us . But look at Paris - the policemen there requested armored cars , and they treat the suburbs like a war zone . I presume it's the same thing in LA or Miami . At some point , the violence will not be confined to "inner city neighborhoods" - because of the number of minorities , and the troubles will start for all of us .
Europeans seem to be unable to understand the american fascination towards firearms
What fascination? They are simply tools. Hollywood has a sick fascination with them as it does with all violence and that coupled with urbanization has created an irrational fear of them among a pampered population.
Believe me , I'm interested in weapons from a technical viewpoint and I examined many belonging to a relative , from 9 mm pistols to military sniper rifles . But I think they are useless for us .
Re: Apocalypto This was an excellent film. I'm disappointed a riled up 'anti-Mel' crowd and Mel's own comments comparing the negative aspects of the movie to policies of George Bush had a tendency to keep the movie from being seen as it should have been.
Sometimes Mel doesn't make much sense. He has to know the base for his movie will be conservatives, so why get involved in political discussions that will alienate that base?
Only Mel has been able to successfully rally the Christian filmgoers, but he spends too much time shooting himself in the foot.
