Build your own Starship!
I thought about this idea for quite a while.
If a player has the opportunity to create a customized starship that the player can assign attributes to like "Make this ship function like a scanship while having the ability to detect cloak starships".
The customized starship can be set up in three different classes:
Melee class: only attacks starships or starsystems adjacent to it.
Can have the ability to destroy starships, take over starsystems, effect scanners, resources, and more..
Range class: attacks starships or starsystems up to its max range.
Can have the ability to auto target, damage/destroy starships, effect scanners, shields, resources, paralyze starships, and more.
Special class: can have the ability to scan, repair, cloak-detect, de-mine, drag stars, tow starships, increase effective ratings (commandship), and more.. but will not have the ability to attack ships or stars.
Advantages:
*Saves resources by combining abilities.
*Can help optimize the effectiveness of strategies.
*Flexibility (you can make it work nicely with your existing fleet).
*Multiple abilities in a single package.
Disadvantages:
*Will effectively cost more to build than a specialized starship.
*The more abilities the starship has, the more it will cost! Some abilities will increase the cost very quickly.
*You're limited to certain combinations and for good reason. Don't want to have a starship that can see and attack starships at a range.
You can choose in the starship list what the custom starship will do. The custom starship, if selected, counts as 1 of your 6 ship types!

If we're going to have custom starships I think the only fair way to implement this is to make a starship builder in which each player has a certain amount of points and each attribute costs points. Then in the end that price of the starship will be reflected in the number of points used.

That's what I was thinking. You can assign as many abilities as you can in the selected class (Melee, Range, or Special). You can't have a custom ship that has abilities from different classes. The cost of the starship will reflect the abilities it has.
I forgot to mention on the first post that each player is allowed to use only one custom starship in the game. You can create multiple custom ship classes, but you can only use one of those custom ships you have.
Also, I don't think there are going to be starship bonuses for custom starships. (that should be a disadvantage to building one)

Talking about this option reminds me to several diskussions between Glitch and me where we have diskussed the difference between a "GAME" and a "GAME ENGINE".
What some of us are looking for is a "GAME ENGINE": We would like to have a game server with clients which could be extensivly customized by admins.
This way a GAME ENGINE Solar Vengeance might be directly compared with a Content Management System like Drupal, Mambo, Joomla, TYPO3 etc. however it does not organises text and images but game maps, game units, game rules.
The idea would be great because based upon a certain Game Engine, unit and map concept many game play types may come to exist.
- Fleet based battles (without stars)
- Star based battles (with stars)
- No-Capital battles (without capital)
- Capture-and-hold
- Collect scientists (like Capture the flag)

I remember a Turn Based Strategy called Stellar Conquest that allowed you to build custom ships.
