South Devon League History
Please Post a bit about your clubs or the leagues history be it a new club started this season or a club that has been around for many years
Start a new topic for each club and put the clubs name in the "Subject" box
If you only know a little add that as you can edit your post as you find more information i will close the topics for a couple of days to make sure people start a new topic on each team then i will open them and if you have any info of the history of any of the clubs please post it.

Re: club history
Although I cannot find a complete list of the teams which were in the Torquay and District League (former name of the South Devon League) when it started in 1902, it included Babbacombe,Ellacombe and Torquay Y.M.C.A. The following teams who are currently still playing were in the league in 1911.
Dartmouth Utd
Moretonhampstead
Buckfastleigh.
After the First World War the teams playing in the League in 1919/1920 season were Kingskerswell,Chudleigh,Dartmouth R.N.C.,Babbacombe Rangers,Torquay Town Res,Bovey, Chudleigh Knighton,Dartmouth Utd,Newton Town,Dartmouth Wesleyans and Buckfastleigh.

Re: club history
The Torquay & District League was actually founded in 1903 NOT 1902!
There were 8 founder members:
Bovey St Johns
C0ckington
Ellacombe
GWR Students Reserves
Paignton
Torquay GPO
Torquay United Reserves
Torquay YMCA

Re: club history
My apologise, it was just that I attended the Centenary Dinner !4/11/2002.
I think it was Torquay United rather than Torquay United Res. who were among the founder members.

Re: club history
Well therein lies a tale!
It is actually a lot easier than people think to check up on local football history. The Torquay Times gave very good coverage at the turn of the century, and they are free to view on microfilm at the library.
I’m a TUFC historian and actually found out that the club was formed in 1899 not 1898 as was commonly accepted. I got Rothmans to change the date and spoke with Dave Thomas so that the Herald was absolutely clear before TUFC’s centenary came along.
In 2002, the Herald started to build up the SDL’s centenary. I knew full well that the League started in 1903/04 as I had come across it in researching TUFC. I even had printouts of the story about formation from 1903. So I rang Dave Thomas and he put me in touch with Ted Benney.
Ted seemed interested but sounded a bit worried that the Dinner had been booked and might have to be moved. I didn’t really give that a second thought – I just wanted to set the historical record straight. I agreed to bundle up copies of a few old press reports proving the date and posted them to Ted, and also sent a copy to Dave Thomas at the Herald.
I heard no more from Ted or the SDL, but had a nasty surprise when I opened the Herald the following week. It appears that Dave had gone on holiday and left the football desk in the incapable hands of Gordon Hines. He didn’t bother to read the papers I had copied and didn’t bother to contact me. Instead he ran a nasty piece in which he published my full name and address (I see he did the same to somebody from Harbertonford re the Channing Woods debate this week) saying that I was trying to force the SDL to postpone its Centenary Dinner by falsely claiming that the League was not formed until 1903, but the League was certain that 1902 was right!
I lost all respect for Gordon Hines and Ted Benney. I went out of my way to try to help and had it thrown back in my face.
By the way, it was TUFC Reserves in 1903/04 – the first team was in the East Devon League.
It’s funny that the naughty words filter won’t let me say ****ington. I wonder if I could say C0ckington.

Re: South Devon League History
TORQUAY TIMES 25 September 1903
Junior Association Football will benefit to a great extent this season by the formation of the Torquay and District Junior League. A handsome cup has been presented to the League by Mr. J.W. Harrison, president of the East Devon Football Asssociation, who evinces a keen interest in Junior football in Devon and the foolowing clubs have entered for the competition, viz:- Paignton, Ellacombe, C0ckington, Torquay United Reserves, Torquay Y.M.C.A., Newton G.W.R. Students' Reserves, Bovey St. John's A.F.C. and the Torquay Post Office A.F.C. These clubs, with the addition of H.M.S. Britannia, Montpellier School, and Bovey Grammar School have also been affiliated to the East Devon Association. The donor of the cup (Mr. Harrison) has been elected president of the League, and Messrs. E. Palmer and W.J. Luscombe hon. secretary and hon. treasurer repectively.
On the same page :
The Torquay Y.M.C.A. football club will start their second season tomorrow with a match against Torquay United Reserves on the ground where Knowsley cricket and football clubs used to play their matches. The Association will play all their matches there. Mr. Easterbrook, the secretary, has arranged a capital list of fixtures and the club has entered for the Torquay and District Football League, a silver cup being given by Mr. J.W. Harrison to the club which comes out on top.
