Bishopsteignton UFC
Bishopsteignton Utd Football Club was founded sometime prior to the 1920/21 season. This makes the club one of the oldest in South Devon.
Details of exactly how the club came into being are vague. It is known that Mr Wallis, the village schoolmaster, encouraged future players by forming a school team several years earlier. The local Lindridge Estate had its own team, but this left few opportunities for many village lads. The desire of these lads to play seems to have inspired Mr Wallis and other villagers to take action and Bishopsteignton Utd was born.
The club played its first league match in September 1920, losing a close contest to Babbacombe Athletic. Players regularly featured in that first season included Heywood, Parish, Hulland, Battershill, Nilsen, Back, Treen, ****ram, and Dawe.
The President was Dr Addison (MP), and the chairman Col. Gardiner.
In the early years the pitch was to be found in the village. Locations seen in the press reports include ****haven Field, Murley Fields, and Durley Lane. Likewise the changing facilities tended to move, and they certainly left a lot to be desired! Older villages may still remember hot water being carried to fill the bath at the old scout hall (by the Methodist Church).
A proper changing hut was finally provided at Murley Field in the 1950’s. This was then moved to Colway Cross in 1961, and finally to Humber Park in 1969. The old wooden structure finally fell apart in the 1980’s and was replaced with modern facilities including electricity and hot showers.
The club’s fortunes on the field have ebbed and flowed over the years. Highlights must include a Herald Cup final appearance in 1946 (with Les Martin in goal), and promotion to the Premier Division in the late 1990’s. Last season the club lifted the prestigious Belli Cup after a thrilling win over East Allington.
At present the club have teams in the South Devon League Premier and division 4.
We have recently run a junior team, and Saturday morning fun coaching for local youngsters. Unfortunately whilst lots of lads want to play football we are struggling to find sufficient helpers. In particular we need someone to help with making teas on matchdays, enthusiastic parents to organise the young ones on Saturday mornings, and general volunteers to maintain the pitch and changing rooms.
