Chelston F.C.
In 1925 Chelston 'village' team was formed to play at Victoria Park in Sherwell Valley. From Victoria Park the club moved to a field which is now the site of nos. 71 to 83, Nut Bush Lane. The arrival of more builders meant a further move in 1956, this time to the purpose-built ground at Armada Park.
The club has won many trophies on the playing field. In the early years after reaching the highest league in South Devon, Chelston won the championship no less than six times.
Their first success coming in 1934-35 season. It was retained the following year and further success came in 1938-39. Following the war the club shared the title in 1947-48.
Between 1949 and 1951-52 the club held the championship for three consecutive years.
The main Cup for South Devon League clubs is the 'Herald' Cup and Chelston achieved four successes. The first being in 1932-33 and twice more before the war (1935-36 and 1938-39). 1951-52 they were victorious again to complete a League and Cup double.
After gaining the double in season 1951-52, fresh fields were sought and a successful entry was made to the Premier Division of the Exeter and District League, and after a few enjoyable seasons success came in season 1956-57,when Clyst Valley F.C. were beaten at St James's Park, Exeter, and the East Devon Senior Cup bought back to Chelston. While at Home Park, Plymouth the Devon County Senior Cup was shared in a 2-2 draw with Plymouth United and the Cup jointly held for six months by each club.
The club continued to flourish running a Reserve side and a Youth team. The Youth team won many local trophies, but their greatest success was winning the Devon County Youth Cup in both 1976-77 and 1978-79 seasons.
After a few lean years the Chelston 1st team won the Devon County Senior Cup in 1984-85, also gaining promotion to the Devon and Exeter Premier Division.
The club continued to enjoy success cumulating in winning the Devon County Premier Cup 1989-90.
The 1992-93 season saw the formation of the Devon County League of which Chelston F.C. could have been founder members, but for the lack of suitable ground facilities.
At the end of another successful season 1994-95 the entire 1st team squad plus many from the reserve side left the club to join clubs in the County League with their higher playing standards and facilities. This resulted in the club having to withdraw the 1st team from the Devon and Exeter League and for the 1995-96 season the club ran with only one team.
The club restored its reserve team for the 1996-97 season in the South Devon League.
After several quite successful years, due to lack of volunteers to run the club, it merged with Kingskerswell for the start of the 2006-07 season.
