Was held hostage......
I am back from my trip...and what a trip it was!!!!
We were held hostage by a 4-legged critter!!!
The hand-fasting went wonderfully on the 4th. The afternoon/evening of the 5th was spent packing up my SUV.
I left home on the 6th and headed to Georgia, to my DD's. Got there safe and sound. On the 7th, she and I headed out to Alabama to the campground.
We got there without incident, got the tent and sun shelter set up, then went to get groceries. Had several visitors that night, so I grilled hotdogs.
Wednesday, we piddled around camp for a bit, then my sister came up. We played games all afternoon/evening. After she left, around 10:30, we had a 4-legged visitor. A skunk came into camp. We were able to get it to go away without getting sprayed.
Thursday, DD and I bummed around the town we were in....ate lunch out, went to Walmart, drove around, etc. Got back to camp, and had the evening to ourselves.
Friday, early afternoon, my DD's biological father and his step son came up for a bit.....they left about 3, then a bit after 7 one of my other DD's, her b/f and my granddaughter came up. They left around midnight. Shortly after they left, we had another skunk come visiting. This one wasn't as easily detered as the first one was. This one started to thump (not a good thing...they do that right before they spray), but for some reason, decided not to spray us. We slowly backed up the trail to the bath-house. Stayed in there for about 20 minutes, then headed back to camp, via the road. Got into my SUV until we could determine if we still had 'company'. Decided we were clear, so went and got all our stuff off the table where we'd been (we had all kinds of light when the critter came up). We got into the tent and zipped up the door. I was playing on my laptop, doing some fractal art, DD was on the phone with her honey. All of a sudden....DD says "Mom..did you hear that?" We get quiet. She gets off the phone, I close the laptop...the tent light was still on. I grab the flashlight, don't see a thing. We're almost afraid to go to sleep at this point...lol. We FINALLY decide to try to get some sleep about 2:30, so we lay down, but I still have the tent light on. Next thing we know, something (not sure if it was the skunk or something else) rubs along the back wall of the tent, from corner to corner. My DD's cot was along that wall...lol. Then, it comes around the side of the tent, and when it's almost at the front corner, it starts to dig at the tent, trying to get in...UHOH!!!! What now? We lay perfectly still...both of us having to pee so bad we can't see straight. The critter crunches along the front of the tent and stops right where my head is and starts digging again..tryin to get in. Ok...we're sufficiently freaked out at this point. I roll off my cot, onto the floor, grab the flashlight and try to see if I can see our captor (yes..we are being held hostage by a critter!!!!)Finally, we decide to make a break for my SUV...we grab pillows, blankets, and anything else we feel we need to take with us. I tell my DD to start whistling loudly.....so, here are 2 adult women, whistling in the middle of the night as loud as we can...and what song do we BOTH end up whistling??? Zippidee Doo Da!!! ROTFL. Ok...get the door unzipped, she flies out, I zip up and we're tossing pillows and what-not into the SUV, diving in behind it all. Close doors, crack open windows and head to the bathroom. On the way back to our site, a skunk crosses the road in front of us......heading toward our site....get around the curve just before our site, and another one crossing the road, out of our site. We get parked, and it's sooo humid. I decide to make an attempt to get the small fan out of the tent. When I mention it to my DD, her reply...."ARE YOU CRAZY?????" To do this entails: getting out of the SUV, unzipping the tent door, zipping it back up, unplugging the laptop and both fans, grabbing the small fan, unzipping and rezipping the door, unzipping the small tunnel door (where you can attach a kid's tent), pulling the extension cord and power strip out, zipping that back up, going behind the tent to the SUV. Ok....I decide NOT to attempt it. I crank the SUV, and the lights shine right on a camper across the way...nothing I can do about that. My lights come on automatically, and I can't stop it. What to do? I back up and angle the SUV at the back of the tent to filter the light somewhat. So...here we sit. Can't sleep cause it's too hot and uncomfortable. Finally, at about 6:50 or so, we have enough daylight to check out camp, and head back to the tent to bed. We're in bed around 7, but I can't sleep.....I keep cracking up, laughing so hard I'm in tears. Finally, we get to sleep, and after only about 2 hours, my mom calls and wakes us up. GRRRR. DD and I had decided we were going to break camp a day early..we just couldn't handle another night like that, so we just end up getting up and start packing. We did at least get a day's refund for our trouble!!
You can bet that next year I'll have a trailer hitch on my SUV and will be towing my camper!!!!!
All in all, it was a great trip......critter captor and all!!!

Re: Was held hostage......
Haha, wow. Sounds fun, though, despite the skunk and critter-ness!
We're glad to have you back!
My family used to go camping in the Boundary Waters...we haven't in a loooooong time, though. I'd love to go again. Oh well.

Re: Was held hostage......
I can't imagine not camping...critters and all.
My DH and I went camping on our honeymoon...lol. In a tent! Was a great honeymoon.
One of the nice things about where my DD and I went on this trip, it was in a very wooded area, which made me very happy. I seem to be happiest when I'm among a lot of trees.
Next year, however, I'll do my best to see that I have a hitch on my SUV so I can tow my pop-up camper. Won't have to worry so much about critters trying to get in, then.
