The Golden Compass
Hey, did anyone get to see this movie on opening day? Which is today?
I can't wait! It looks so awesome and so perfect for this little ex-Catholic who knows all too well the dangers of strict dogmatism and an unbending authority figure.
I want the books too.
I'm a little irritated right now at certain members of the Christian community. They are throwing an absolute tantrum over this movie. Sure, it's based on books written by an Atheist. In a fantasy world setting he shows us the kind of real world he'd like to see. Yeah so? CS Lewis can give us Narnia and Mel Gibson can give us his take on the passion of Jesus Christ but...an Atheist can't write about how he thinks religious ideals can be dangerous to humanity?
In the third book apparently they "kill God" Yeah, and? If Mel Gibson made a movie about Christians killing the ancient gods and goddesses they'd all cheer and look at Pagans weirdly if we took offense. But it's ok if *your* religion does it right? Because you have the truth right?
So anyways..I can't wait to see it. The trailer is fricking awesome and is on my MySpace page if you want to see it. Or look up official Golden Compass trailer on YouTube.

Re: The Golden Compass
I can't wait to see it! I heard from one of the Mensa Gen-Xers that it's a really great flick. (He went to an advanced screening last weekend). According to him the first movie doesn't get into the really heavy topics that some people are worried about.
I'm irritated at the groups who are up in arms about it. Why can't a fantasy movie just be left as a fantasy movie? Seriously. I think they ran out of whining they could do about the Harry Potter series when the author out-ed Dumbledoor or something. (we need an eyeroll icon!)
I'm all about letting that metaphorical cigar stay just a cigar, metaphors intended or not. I love a good story and am perfectly capable of leaving a book or movie as just that- A Good Story.
