Rider died in tournament near here

It's not anything that would move the world. Even so, I heard in the news yesterday, and found the article in the paper this morning.

A military rider, she was thrown when her horse stumbled over an obstacle it was meant to jump. They say she broke her neck in the fall. She was only 32. They stopped the tournament after her death.

It made me cry, for some silly reason. I don't even know her. Happened about an hour away, yesterday.

That is sad. I won't deny that it happens, though. Eventing--I'm presuming she was doing an event--is one of the most dangerous sports. People laugh when they hear that. They think, "Why? You're just sitting there."

One year I went to watch the Kentucky Rolex, and on the cross country phase they had to put a horse down on the course. They kept the whole thing pretty hushed, and they did hold a moment in memory of the horse after the final day, but they didn't stop the event. Anyway, I still don't really know what happened other than the horse hit the jump and flipped over it. I heard a leg was broken and they thought it would be more human to put him down there rather than cause him pain to move him when odds were he wouldn't make it.

Yes, it was in a competition. We call the cross-country part (with obstacles) the "military" part.

The horse stumbled over an obstacle, the rider was thrown over the horse's head and broke her neck. Just like Christopher Reeve, except that she died instantly. Both horse and rider were experienced and seasoned competitors. I think the horse was fine, actually.

Ah, well.

Hi, It is hard to hear about horse accidents(for humans or horses). But it does happen. If we want to interact with these beautiful beings that are hugh compared to us humans we have to expect sometimes accidents will happen. We have just 2 horses. Our male is a handsome quarter horse that a friend gave us that has a great lineage but he had aaccident years ago and the break was fixed but the screws came loose and ripped his tendons. They put him through surgeries before they had him fixed. His GrandFather was sold for 2million. He can run and enjoy life but we do not ride him because he cannot bear the extra weight. he is a wonderful companion though to our other horse!

Hi Cathy, welcome to Sphaira.

Glad to hear about your horse, he sounds like a gem, even if you can't ride him.

Feel free to post a little intro for yourself. emoticon

Firle, I imagine you cried because it seemed to be such a senseless death for the young woman. You're a compassionate person, and you do feel other's pain, I think.
It's sad that this happened.
:hugs:
