Has the new "Robin Hood" lived up to its promise?

Coming from Canada, I haven't had the opportunity to see the new series yet. Part of the show's publicity was based around the promise that Marion (Lucy Griffiths) would get her fair share of action sequences, and in a couple of episodes, based on the clips provided at the official BBC website, she's been seen with bow and arrow, and even cleverly disarming someone with a hairpin early in the season.

The only swordplay so far, however, seems to have been with those villainesses in episode ten.

Hey, this weekend's episode was a cracker - a fantastic swordfight with four Saracen hitwomen, loads of the sherriff's guards got wiped out by these babes, dressed in what looked like belly dancer garb with vales; when they confronted Robin and his gang, they took off their vales and jackets to reveal tightish blue jump suits (not very historical but great fun). Robin and his boys struggled to hold them off, but at the very end were helped out by a lone stranger they had befriended in the forest; luckily for them he had fought in the Crusades, and one by one he beat off the women (one got run through, three then slashed to death). No blood, but quite violent for 1800 hours (6:00 PM) Family viewing! (Hope you guys over the pond get to see it some time, it was fun).

Marion hasn't fared so well. She keeps playing the nice person, has her hair cut short in one episode for helping villagers in need, and still holds back. This week, she'll be rewarded with a scene in which she's gravely wounded. With only two episodes left this season, I think something special needs to happen soon.

But let's hear from those who have seen the complete episodes so far. Has the new "Robin Hood" lived up to its promise, or does it fall short of the action that its lighthearted cousin "The New Adventures of Robin Hood" provided? Tell us what you think.

Re: Has the new "Robin Hood" lived up to its promise?

Reading the synopsis for last night's episode (not reprinted here because of a major spoiler), I have to wonder not only how they plan to resolve the episode 12 cliffhanger, but also, if the worst case scenario holds up through to the end of the series, just how they expect to hold on to the viewers who have supported the series up until now after what happened last night.

Robin and Marian are getting closer and it won't be long before she declares her undying love. The chemistry between them is keeping the nation on tenterhooks!

The show has become increasingly violent as it's progressed - we monitor this by the number of times we have to ask the children to look away. We're disappointed that so much and such brutal and continuous violence has been deemed appropriate or necessary in what could have been a great family show.

Final episode of the first season and all ends well.
And while it's not a swordfight, that's a nice right hook.

Who else wants to see this show back for a second season?
