WEEKLY PRACTICE
Hey guys, sorry I have not been very active on this board recently; I assure I am still active in Dagorhir (as many of you can no doubt attest) and I want to help Taurendor keep our momentum for the coming year.
To that end, I want to make sure we have a regular weekly practice going, one that does not require someone to text message everyone else to let us know whether it is happening or not (though I think we all appreciate Destinova's efforts in doing that) because it is essential to maintaining a realm that we fight regularly and consistently in a public space.
To that end, I would like to find out a) who fights weekly and where, and b) could we combine our Philadelphia-area practices into one, ideally a daytime practice?
As it seems right now, Saturday afternoon is clearly the best choice for a practice. Sunday afternoon, many people (including fighters in our realm) are going to be busy with football or housework or the like, whereas having practice in the evening is not really feasible unless we got a large indoor venue, like a gym, to hold them (this is also an option, about which more later).
It does not get so cold in Philadelphia that we cannot fight outside during the winter in daylight. But nighttime is likely to be far too cold for comfort, and more to the point, potential new fighters will almost certainly not be out and about and see us. For this reason, I would like to see us with a standing Saturday afternoon (1-4pm) practice at an outdoor location to be determined by, perhaps, a council vote.
As regards locations, I can think of only one that we have experience with, Pennypack Park - Pine Road (the current battle location). However, there are a number of other sites--parks, recreation centers, playgrounds--that could serve us well as practice venues.
Near me, in West Philadelphia, there is Clark Park, for example. Clark Park is in a high-traffic, safe, active area bounded by Baltimore Avenue and Chester Avenue, near the University of the Sciences and, somewhat further, Penn. On Saturdays and Thursdays there is a farmer's market, and nearby there is a great cafe and a pizza place. Part of the park is a bowl-shaped area that would be excellent for practices. However, as some of you know, the Wayfinder Experience currently uses this site on Saturdays, so it's more of an example of the kind of place we would want.
One thing we need to consider is that most of the people in our realm live in Northeast Philadelphia. But, we should keep in mind that, ideally, we would draw membership from all over the Philadelphia area, and if we had practice somewhere else, such as Fairmount Park, where people come from all over the city to visit, that would give us greater exposure.
Indoor practice locations are another thing to consider, as they would enable us to practice during the evening in the winter. The Phila department of recreation website lists a number of them all over the city--I suggest you all take a glance at the site and see what looks good. If we are serious enough about getting and indoor location, we can call and see when their facilities are available and what they include.
Anyway, just some preliminary thoughts from me--let's keep this an active discussion.
