posticon Nuclear Submarine

Ever since i made the "Generic Diesel Submarine" map several years ago, I've wanted to make a Nuclear Submarine map. Well, I finally got inspired enough to avoid work for a short time while I work on this project emoticon

Its not based on any particular submarine but it does slightly resemble a Russian Akula from the external views.
This sub isnt a combat sub, but is a science and research vessel ( Seabed Mapping and monitoring deep ocean siezmic activity )

I added some new textures taken from a Submarine game ( Dangerous Waters ) so the various consoles in the control room are as acurate as us civs are allowed to get.

The pics below have been brightened slightly. Ive also deliberately made the map over-scaled to allow space for characters and the camera to move.
This map is a work in progress, and many improvements are still being made.

Image
Ive used fog for the external views instead of sky. I found this adds quite an atmospheric feeling.

Image
The Radar mast behind my character slowly rotates, adding a nice touch to an otherwise static scene.

Image
The control room took a long time to produce.

Image
I've added various point sounds to some consoles, some emit the familiar submarine "ping" and others make beeping noises

Image
A view of the door to the reactor room, you can hear the angry humming of the reactor as it produces power for the boat.

Image
One of the passageways, here you can see the cramped "Mess hall".

Image
A view of the communications and ESM consoles, behind the big bulkhead door is the control room.

Image
A view of the medical bay/Lab. This is a science vessel after all, so it needs a lab area.

Image
Bunks, this is where the crew sleeps ( 18 bunks in total ) The usual practice for sub crews is to "Hot Bunk", that means some of the crew sleeps while the rest take stations. Then when its time to change shifts, the crew get into a bunk that still warm from the previous person.

Image
The engine room, the massive drive shaft rotate rapidly to propell the boat along emoticon

Image
A view of the Submarines home, these massive pens are built out of 6+ metre thick re-enforced concrete to withstand direct bomb hit.

Image
Another view of the sub pen. The Pen is still under construction but I plan to add various rooms and facilities that lead away from the main area.

Thanks emoticon Tech maps are by far my fav subject, but I like doing some Dark Age maps of certain themes ( Temple of Ultimate Darkness and the Crimson Keep ).

I'm not much good at doing Modern ( City )maps though, dunno why lol, I guess they just dont inspire me enough. But, once this Submarine map is finished I'll give Highgate Sanitorium a go which is basically a modern map, just a little twisted and nightmarish.

I've been back at work the last couple of days, but plan to take another couple of days off to finish the last few areas of the Sub map, hopefully, it'll be ready for distribution by the weekend emoticon

Progress report emoticon

To save some time, I've recycled a couple of old maps to use for a couple of locations. I've also used one area from a map I did about a year or two ago based on the Fallout Game. If your familiar with the game, you might just recognise the area emoticon

Image
Updated Sub Pen

Image
Updated Pen from the gantry leading to the control room

Image
A view from inside of the main base area. Recycling this area saved me at least 3 days making it from scratch.

Image
The sub base from a different angle. The base contains storage rooms, living quarters, bar, gun range, armoury and prison cells. I basically took an existing Dark Future map, and retextured the area to better match the textures of the Sub Pen area.

Image
Another area taken from a Dark Future map, this serves as the nerve center of the sub pen and base.

Image
This is the external storage area that houses a small boat for the crew ( or special forces ) to land at shore areas.
I origianlly had the storage area sunk flush with the hull, but this caused me over 4 hours of problems trying to get the small boat to work effectively as an "exit". So i had to settle for this raised design ( which is actually a little more acurate to some types of submarine )

Image
Heres where the boat takes you, this map was originally the hotel area of Fallout's "Necropolis", but I modified it to make it into a ruined and bombed city.

Image
Another view of the Bombed city area.

And another

Re: My Latest Mapping Project

Finally finished and awaiting final testing before official release!

What began as a simple nuclear submarine map has developed into a full military base as well!
I had planned to have only the actual sub, the Sub Pen and a ruined city location to explore. However, I continued to expand the actual base facility with map files I already had and a couple I built from scratch.

Heres a couple of new additions :

Image
The Compound, this is the surface entry area to the base. I put this here to allow future expansion of the map. The main gate and the helicopter both have clickable exits set up ready for connecting new areas ( not only for me to expand, but anyone out there who has time to expand the map as well )

Image
I went a little crazy with rotating objects lol, and stuck cieling fans in various "logical" areas. I found this brings a little motion to static places and since we never see much other than doors move around this adds a little variety to the maps.

Image
And finally a map thats been sitting on the HD for about a year or so, this lab is an almost exact copy of the Med-Lab from the movie Aliens. This was originally part of the "Hadleys Hope Remake", but due to various issues, that project was put on hold. So, I thought why not use it here! emoticon

Re: My Latest Mapping Project

All help is greatly appreciated emoticon I'll send it over as soon as I locate your email addy.

Theres still time to include any last minute suggestion or ideas before I release the map officially.

Theres 3 main things that I'm looking out for

1: Sectoring of the "Bombed City" area. This was a real pain to sector without ending up with missing geometry faces. I think I sorted it out in the end but I always end up missing something.
(Due to time constraints, I havent really been able to properly "prop" this area so other than a few lamp posts and pieces of furnature, its looking a bit sparse).

2: External storage area of the "At Sea Mode" Sub, this is a little tricky to close the storage doors without the character becoming stuck briefly. I spent a lot of time trying to find ways to make this work effectively but theres always some problem or another that pops up.
If anyone gets permanently stuck and needs ST help to get unstuck then let me know and I'll try find a solution.

3: Pathing, this is one of my main annoyances, I cant stand it when a character runs all over the place instead of going straight from point A to point B. If anyone finds any pathing issues, or a character "spaz's" when you click somewhere, let me know the details of where you clicked and where your character was standing at the time.

A note to everyone helping with testing : Dont forget, test versions and release versions are not the same, they arent compatible. Delete test versions after testing is done to prevent problems arrising.
Even now I'm still tweaking things and adding bits here and there, chances are todays test version and yesterdays test version are not compatible also.
