Sneaky peek at a new map project.
If theres any map deserving of being rebuilt using the Dark Future Texture Pack, its the Hadleys Hope map.
The original map's layout was all wrong, and was more based on the Hadleys Hope from the movie than an actual reproduction of it ( dont blame me! I never built it lol, I just offered advice. )

So, I decided to bring the map closer to the real Hadleys Hope, and reproduce it exactly as much as the map editor will allow.

The North Lock.

Even the surrounding walls have been duplicated almost exactly ( you'll have to watch the movie yourself to notice this ).
The entire exterior occupies three times more ground area than the previous map. The entire structure is more accurate in size and layout, and theres modular buildings dotted around that can only be entered from outside.

Well, thats all for now, more screenies will arrive as the map becomes developed more emoticon

If your wondering what real difference the DF texture pack can make, then check this screenie out. Of course its still a work in progress, but already the level of detail is way better than I could of imagined.

Aaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Starting to wish I'd never started this one lol, The list of problems just keeps piling up.

The major and biggest problem with trying to stick so closely to the movie is : The Interior does NOT fit the exterior!

This is only really apparent on very close examination, the layout of the various main locations featured in the movie just doesnt fit right with the general exterior layout, and to make things worse, they "Scooby Doo'd" the whole thing!

Basically, theres 1 long passage section with a few doors and corners along its various length. This passage section is first featured in the North Lock entry way when the marines first arrive.

Then, later, the same length of passage is used for another part of the colony complex to connect to the Control Center! This might not sound much of a problem at first, untill you try to fit the various seperated locations together inside of the established exterior shape. And then theres the various doors that you never see open. What lies beyond them I wonder, and those stairs you see where Newt is first encountered, what is up there!

In reality, the movie set consisted of 1 long passage with ALL the major locations situated along its length, they just closed the door to the area they didnt want you to see.

I can understand now why the previous map version's layout was completely wrong, in a way it was right! It fitted the interior layout much better than the propper way it should be!

Well, its mostly been logical deduction in much of its construction. Most of the main areas arent a problem in building ( just look at the movie and copy it ), the major headache lies in connecting them all together in the right way.

Well, so far its all come together pretty well, with about 50% of the entire interior almost finished. This ones a BIG project, and probably take a couple of weeks at least to finish. But I'm sticking to this one, I really want to see it finished ( too much work has already gone into it to abandon it at this stage ) So keep watching for more screenies emoticon

Re: As close as it will ever get!

Heres some more screenies emoticon Havent been able to do much the past week or so due to having a right nasty cold! but I've managed to get a bit more done today so its progressing steadily.

Image

This is part of the Medlab area, with a comparison shot. Its not 100 percent accurate, but close enough. There are many things to consider when making a map, but top of the list is actually giving characters room to move without getting stuck, or going into funky path finding routines. So, I like to make doors a bit over scaled and nice clear areas of floor to move around in.

Image

Another shot of the Medlab, this time the main area. There isnt a clear shot of the whole are in the movie for comparisons, but if you watch it then you'll see the whole panning shot reveal this area.

Image

A theoretical addition, never actually seen, but logically should be there. A Vehicle maintenance and repair depot. This building is situated in an out of the way area so wouldnt actually be noticable to anyone taking the "Movie Route".

over 80 percent of Hadleys was never actually seen during the movie, since it was based in a very limited number of locations, no one ever got to see the Bar, or the Casino, or any of the other interesting, but irrelivent-to-the-movie-plot locations.
So expect many of these unvisited areas to be included as a matter of completeness emoticon

Delays

had to put a pause on this project due to various issues. This doesnt mean it is abandoned, only it will take a little longer than expected to complete.

Will post a notice when the project is resumed emoticon Hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
