posticon Dunwich - A NWN World of Darkness

I decided to see what I could do with the new resources available with the new patch.
Basing much of the content on a historical medieval world with CKWoD stuff thrown in.

I had learned a lot with a previous module ( World ) I made so put that knowledge to good use.
The main focus of this was to stay well clear of fantasy and magic so engineered some scripts that will strip any "magic" item anyone brings into Dunwich of all of its magic effects, rendering it down to a plain old item.

I have also managed to add a custom written script that causes Undead ( Vampire )Characters to burst into flames in the sunlight, and will continue to burn for as long as they remain so. There are networks of caves though so mobility during the day is still possible.

The setting of Dunwich is simple, the realm is afflicted by some unknown curse of some type ( no one really knows what it is ) that plunges the land into a state of fear. Undead and Werewolves stalk the land, and at night, the ever present fog turns almost deadly, any mortal wandering the night could become riddled with a rotting disease that eats the flesh.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are a few

Image
Dunwich Town, the streets, like much of the land, is almost deserted. The locals lock themselves inside their houses and live in fear of not only the undead, but also the Lord of the realm ( guess who it is... none other than Aldur himself lol who, incidently rules from a castle on the edge of the town known as... guess... Dunwich Keep )

Image
There are many things to do in town, one of them is to visit the Training Hall. ( I disabled the ability to gain experience through combat. There are other ways though, through training, exploring, undertaking work opportunities, etc )

Image
When a character dies, they can respawn at a nearby crypt, but what I have done is build a new script that turns the character into an undead creature upon re-awakening. The player can choose to remain as undead ( Vamp or any other type of foul undead being ) or try to seek back thier mortality. A character must seek out an Exorcist to regain thier mortality but might not survive the Exorcism and remaim as undead

Image
Dunwich town gate is automatically locked at night, but no one knows if it is to protect the people from the things outside, or to keep them trapped inside. Many places lock their door at night to simulated closing hours ( or could it be fear of the darkness? )

Image
A closup of some of the new armour sections in the patch. Nicely detailed, the only shame is they didnt retexture the character heads. Armour can be made in minutes in the Toolset to tailor a Characters look, and takes only minutes to learn how to do it ( and thats the major problem with many NWM players, they make Uber items all the time, but my magic stripping script pisses them right off lol )

Image
With the right lighting, fog and weather effects, even the original locations provided in the original version of NWN can look spooky and not too eye melting.

Image
Another example of lighting and how it can make a world of difference to how NWN originally looks.

Image
This could almost be an oil painting emoticon

Image
I hated the look of all of the original NWN clothing and armour, they looked like a blind man on acid tried to make them. So I basically made all the clothing and armour from scratch to look dull ( common clothing ) in shades of brown, grays and black. There other colours of clothing available such as white shirts for those with slightly better fashion sense though.

Image
The Port lies a fair distance away from the town, and is generally the starting point for new ( mortal ) characters.

Image
This looks almost like an oil painting too emoticon

Image
With nightfall coming theres is a bit of a rush to get back inside the town, no one wants to spend the night camping in some cave, abandoned watchtower or even a crypt.

Dunwich ( named after the book "The Dunwich Horror" ) turned out quite good. Theres a lot more too it that I explain ( and possibly bore you with ) here, and much of the dark and fearful atmosphere comes from the sounds and weather effects.
Once I get scripting I end up turning NWN into something completely different and it barely resembles the original game any more. I'll keep working at it though when time permits and see what other new and unique things I can do emoticon

Wow this doesnt look like a bad game...So, you can become a vampire when you die and then live your life as a vampire if you wish to? or a zombie or whatever other creature instead of being a boring human? emoticon

Technically, the original game is Fantasy ( AD&D ), Dragons and Magic is in abundance.
What I've done is make my own world and made a lot of scripts to changes much of the default behaviour and remade most of the items, armour, weapons and clothing available.
It means a lot of custom content and is very time consuming to do.
Luckily, I can do all this and clients dont need to download any extra stuff, its all sent via the connection to the server.

I hated a lot about the original NWN game, for a start Magic and Magic items are way too common ( Magic should be rare and wonderous ). And the whole world it was based in was bright and too colourful.
Even a plague ridden city looked clean and sanitised.
The original game can be summed up in one word : Yuck ( dunno if it is even a propper word lol ).

In Dunwich :
You can only play Undead, Vampires, Ghouls and Werewolves because I have made various scripts to allow a player to do so ( as well as many other unique things ).
I remade a new world based on many horror novels, such as Dracula, Frankenstien, Dunwich Horror, Nosferatu, etc... anything that is based on a gothic and dark theme of horror.

I've also added a new playbable character class, the Sorcerer, ( I restricted much of the other classes due to them having access to too much magic abilities, Magic in Dunwich is extremely rare and mostly manifests as faith abilities by NPC Priests, Exorcists and Monks. I decided to add the Sorcerer because I really liked the movie "Warlock" and felt that it does fit Dunwich well.), Sorcerers are the only magic user allowed in the world and there are scripts in place to alter them to fit the world properly.
All sorcerers are automatically named as Witches or Warlocks ( depending on Gender ) and their Deity is automatically named as "Lucifer".
The bane of all "Sorcerers" are Witch Finder General's so they are very carefully ballanced as a playable class.

Anyway, I'm rambling on again...
I'm going to shut up now emoticon
