in 2200AD The Moons of Neptune were a major interest to the spacecraft shipyard industries when the first colonisation missions began. The Hiroshi-Ito International company owned the rights to seven of Neptunes moons with the ownership of Despina in dispute with their rivals, Thompson Garret Industries. At the time it was not known that the Giovanni had a large interest in the Hiroshi mining operations. The Giovanni had become a silent partner and offered funding for many of the more risky mining attempts.
Many of the moons were rich in metals used to build the hulls of spacecraft and so started the early mining colonies. Most mining operations were run by a leading Giovanni clan member.
Because Neptune lay so far out in the solar system, and was vulnerable to attacks by pirates and Sabbat it became a dangerous place to live and work. Eventually, the overall cost of shipping mined ore back to earth and losses sustained in attacks became more than it was worth to continue mining operations. That and a massive deposits of minerals and metals discovered in the asteriod belt meant the doom of Neptunes mines.
One by one, the mining colonies were abandoned as the Giovanni and Hiroshi closed down facilities, and Neptunes potential forgotten.

At the height of the mining operations, the moons yielded vast quantities of metals and minerals, more than enough to build vast fleets of spacecraft. Although the quantity could not offset the loss, eventually it became unprofitable once the deposits were discovered in the asteriod belt between Mars and Jupiter. Many mining colonies lie scattered accross the moons surfaces, powered down and abandoned. However, the vast untouched resources still lie inside the moons, waiting to be tapped once again.

One of the mining colonies has recently been occupied and mining operations resumed. Triton has become alive again with activity and it is known a vague company known as the Crimson Mining Corporation has bought one of the mines and is drawing a steady profit from the resources. Although this company is small, it is suspected that they are working with the Giovanni, and more than mining is happening on the surface. The fleet of MCT's ( Medium Cargo Transports ) has noticable grown, with larger ships ferrying Giovanni persons back and forth from the Giovanni Haven moon of Phobos. Earth's Military Enforcers suspect the mining operations are actually funding weapon research for terrorist attacks against the innocent peoples of Diemos ( The Camarilla Haven Moon ).

Proteus was one of the quieter mining operations in the days when Neptune was a major mining industry. The single mining complex that occupies the moon has been long since powered down, and all personell relocated to other parts of the solar system.

Mining was not the main area of production in the Proteus mines however, deep under the actual facility is a vast underground complex containing bio-containment chambers, DNA analysis systems, cryogenics equipment and other advanced technical equipment.
The mines operated as a cover to what actually went on deep inside the moon. Even though all aparent activity has ceased.... occasionally a light would flicker on in one of the rooms.
