History

Due to the virtually inhospitable conditions on Mercury, it took many years for it to become suitable for settlements. By the 2300s, a large area of the planet had successfully been ‘domed’, giving the potential new inhabitants an atmosphere, gravity, protection from the massive amount of sunlight, and a constant hospitable temperature. The settlement itself is located in the most suitable area, in a region between the frozen icecaps and the Colaris Basin, the hottest place on the whole planet.

Being the closest planet to the sun, Mercury has a day lasting the equivalent of 58.65 earth days, and so sees a lot more sun than any other planet. Due to these excessive amounts of sunlight, the majority of vampires stay well clear of Mercury, preferring to avoid the risk of going up in flames. But, because of this general vampiric dislike for the planet, Mercury has also become the home-world of a select few well-hidden, notorious ‘criminal’ and ‘influential’ vampires, who know that an attack from opposing kindred is extremely unlikely.

Industry

The main income for the planet’s relatively small population, comes from a small group of industrial areas, known to extract iron and nickel from the planets core, so they can export it to companies and planets around the solar system. Set up by 2328, these industrial regions provide a living for many workers and their families. It was clear that the needs of the workers’ families, along with the actual workers needed to be provided for, so in 2330 an area of the settlement known as Lucidus, was adapted to be as close to a typical earth town as possible, even providing a primary and high school, along with a university and a hospital. Providing yet more job opportunities, the town of Lucidus is gradually helping the popularity of Mercury amongst both mortal and Cainite society. Mercury may be still be a developing planet when compared to many others in the solar system, but it is making gradual progress.

Recent Events

In 2436, a strange mortal cult appeared on Mercury, but how exactly it was formed and the way in which it got to the planet is still unknown. Claiming to have had relatives ‘slaughtered by vampires’, a small group of mortals have decided to live on mercury, believing the masses of sunlight will offer them protection from the vampires they believe to exist. Although in some cases it has shown to be true that some of these mortals really did have relatives, who saw the ‘war’ between Cainites, Garou and Mortals around the time of 2360, in the majority of cases, it is merely derangement. Even if there is some truth in the origins of this ‘Cult’, the majority of mortal society merely think of them as insane, and are more than happy to let them remain on Mercury, reasonably unsupervised … as long as they stay there.

At present, the planet is mainly populated by mortals, but also falls under Camarilla rule.
