posticon History

The asteroid belt lies between Mars and Jupiter, and contains enough chunks of rock to make several planets. Some asteriods even reach the size of small moon and the whole belt follows a slow orbital pattern around the sun.
Navigating the belt can be tricky but if a course is planned correctly to avoid the larger asteroids it shouldnt be too much of a problem.

Charting the belt was almost impossible at the beginning of deep space travel, but once navigation technology improved to certain levels, each asteriod larger than a football could be marked and its path around the sun tracked. Once plotting the asteriods was successful, the next step was to setup mining facilities on the larger asteroid surfaces.

Mining asteriods was much easier than mining a planet as much of the resources lay close to, or on the surface. The enviroment proved a bigger hazard and the occasional collison between asteriods became a major problem.

Asteroid collisions could easily be predicted as charting technology improved, and the asteriod mines could be evacuated within a safe ammount of time.

Asteriods still remain the solar systems richest source of metals and minerals, and the profits gained far outnumber the profits from any other planet based mining facility, and has been known to put several hundred planetary mines out of business.

Here is a list if major Asteroid Belt Asteriods, most of these have mining facilities already established at this time and are some of the largest Asteroids so far discovered.

Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta, Astraea, Hygeia, Psyche, Nysa, Feronia, Aethra, Thule, Glauke, Interamnia, Ida.
