The Ascendancy ( or Dark Angels or Dark Ascendants )

Due to the way the current stories have been progressing, not everything has been revealed about this "cult" yet.
However, providing some background to this group will save me a ton of ( Ingame ) explaining and should make understanding this group a little easier than I could explain "in Character".

So, even though information is given here, in the CK WoD much about them is still a complete enigma.

The origin of the Ascendancy does not actually lie within our world, and although they possess vampiric bodies, they arent at the core of their being, vampires.
Perhaps it would be easiest to understand if I were to start at the beginning.

In the beginning.......
There were 12 members of the Ascendancy, they were the keepers of the Ascension Plane, a place of spirit and light and the last step to Heaven.
The 12 Keepers craved the glory of entering Heaven yet were denied a rightful place in gods kingdom.
Their place was in the Ascension plane, and would spend eternity never knowing or entering this great and ultimate kingdom.

Aeons passed and the resentment grew, they plotted ways and means to taking what they felt was rightfully theirs. They felt betrayed by God, ignored and used.
Then one day an Angel from the glorious kingdom came to them with an offer.
There would be a war, God would be overthrown and creation would be remade.
The 12 Keepers of Ascension willingly joined the rebellion.

The rebellion failed and the one who had lead them was cast out from the Great Kingdom of Heaven to forever dwell in the pits of the Abyss, as far away from the glory of God as one could possibly go.
The others of the rebellion, many were cast into the AByss also, many fled, and others repented and were forgiven.

The Keepers of Ascension were offered forgiveness, but still never to enter Heaven, they chose damnation and cursed the name of god.
In turn they were forever denied forgiveness and six were cast upon the the face of the earth as bodyless entities, forever to wander the earth as nothing but mist and shadow, the other six were cast into the Abyss to be forever consumed.
With the Ascency Keepers halved in number, they would never again attain the power they once had.

And then Caine happened, the six of the Earthbound Ascendancy Keepers, without body or form took interest and watched and waited.
Untill Caine had sired many childer, and those Caine sired, sired childer of their own.
The first city fell into chaos, with those of Caines bloodline killing one another.
And it was then that the Six Keepers appeared to a selected few of the grandchilde of Caine, they offered a deal.
In return for success in this sibling war, they were to give their bodies to the six Keepers, to lead and to win.

And so the Six Keeper of Ascension possessed six of Caines's bloodline, and then betrayed them. They left this land and turned their backs upon the conflict and simply vanished.

The Keepers of Ascension named themselves the Hexaform Ascendancy, and wandered the Earth in search of a way to regain thier past powers. They shed themselves from Cainite kind, kept thier distance yet kept a watch upon them.
Watched as the bloodline of Caine spread accross the Earth like a plague.

Only one event in the history of Mortals betrays the presence of the Ascendancy, and that was of the great ancient Mayan city of Teotihuacan. A huge population of Mortals gathered and built pyramids and temples in the name of their gods....
And the Ascendancy stood at the centre of its civilisation, demanding sacrifices of blood and souls, and they diablerised all they could in search of the power to ascend once more.
Untill the mortals who worshipped them rebelled, burned the great city and fled, abandoning their gods to the raging inferno.

They possessed the weaknesses of the Kindred, the fear of fire and could not walk in the sunlight, yet could not be truly killed. Their bodies can be destroyed, but their dark angelic wraith-like bodies were freed of its confines to seek out a new body.

The Ascendancy were betrayed by their own people, incinerated as the city burned, but soon found new Cainite bodies.
They grew darker and no act of depraved murder and genocide were too much.
They revelled in undoing all that god had created, walked upon the Earth to break the holy commandments.

They became a scourge to both mortals and Cainites alike. But this madness could not be hidden and they soon found themselves hunted by the children of Caine.
The six fled in different directions, to the corners of the Earth.

And eventually four of their number had been captured, yet killing them would set them free, instead they had to be imprisoned alive, and kept alive. And so a way was found to trap their blackened souls within the body, and the body held at the edge of death.

Each of the Six had taken names for themselves, to be known and feared by Mortals.

Vezuviel Mephistopholes
The darkest of the Ascendancy members, Vezuviel prefers to inhabit the body of Lasombra Cainites and this clan is also his preferred "snack". Diablerising Lasombra in a frenzied craving.
He views the path to unseat God from the throne of heaven as via the Abyss.
He possesses the disciplines that most Lasombra have, and shares their manipulative nature.
He is a very patient man and will wait centuries while guiding his "chesspieces" in the next step of his plans

Varloth Cthoga
This is the learned scholar of the group, and keeper of ancient wisdom and knowledge.
He has no preference as to a paticular clan to possess and often changes in the name of aquiring more knowledge.
Varloth has many connections with clans all over the world and has especially close ties to Tzimisce, Baali and Settites.

Lucivius Maleficus
The self appointed "leader" of the Ascendancy, he is extremely viscious and treacherous.
He is probably the only Ascendancy member who is fully unbound by his Earthy-Undead body.
If ever there was a monster to walk this planet, Lucivius would be it.
His merest touch can wither and kill Mortal and Cainite alike in a matter of seconds.
Just by will alone he seares and melt the eyes from all who gaze upon him, he is all that is dark and evil.
At one point in his past, he spent considerable time in the company of Baal.

Morimorphus
This particular member is renowned for his trickster nature, and shares much in common with Vezuviel, one would say they could be brothers.
However, Morimorphus is always the first to argue a point, or disagre with a particular plan. He is very stubborn as will not let things drop when he thinks something can be done in a better way.
Many times he has threatened to Lucivius and claims he can direct the intentions of the Ascendancy better, and with more efficiency.
However, Morimorphus is perhaps the only one of the Ascendancy that is closer to his Vampiric, Human side.
On a number of occasions he has interviened when a vulnerable Mortal was in danger.
He has been accused many times of intentions to seek forgiveness for his role in the rebellion of heaven, instead of continue the rebellion and win.

Scylla Dree
The quiet one, it would seem. Rarely being seen by any but the other Ascendancy members themselves.
Those who do witness her presence are often left the impression that she is quite mad.
Her mind is boundless as the universe yet crammed full of the wisdom of eternity, to a point that she continually speaks and blurts out apparently random sentances ( which later make abolute and undeniable sense )
In the end, many of those that meet her, dismiss her as another crazy Malkavian.

She does have one disturbing ability however, physical matter around her seems symbiotic to her presence, doors open by themselves and trees uproot to allow her passage through.
It has been known on several occasions for a castle wall to tear itself apart to allow her through without her putting any effort into causing it.
It is unknown whether she has influence over physical matter, or physical matter fears her presence so much that it decides to destroy itself or get out of her way.

Dareth Iscivizel
Know within the Ascendancy is The Reaper, he is the death sentance, the judge, jury and executioner. He is the final word of the Ascendancy.
Merciless and souless, viewing all life as an abomination and a crime.
However, he is perhaps the most cunning, and will act civilised and gentlemanly if the situation required it.
Considered a master of deception, as well as an assassin. Dareth has a terrible appetite for devouring souls.
It is said that even Hell would not let him enter for fear of judging the Demons that dwell there.

Relations within the Ascendancy are somewhat turbulent, with each of the six members constantly playing against each other.
They try to outwit each other, trick and decieve with the intention of proving their worth and place for the next term as its representative.

Alone, each member is barely able to function as little more than a very clever Cainite. And together they bicker, argue and very little gets done other than the destruction of the area surrounding them.

An agreement was finally made that only one Ascendancy member would be awake at any one time, the remaining five would sleep for 100 years. This agreement was known as the Maleficus Pact after Lucivius who had suggested the agreement.

During the 100 years, the sleepers spirit forms were free to wander, watch and listen but still they remained bound to their current bodies. Only when the body was destroyed were they truly set free.
And who had proved to be the most influential during that time would be awakened to take his/her turn as the new Ascendancy representative.

Time passed and this proved a successful solution. They found they could do far more this way than if they were all trapped in bodies at the same time.
However, Lucivius still held authority over the Ascendancy, but appreciated that each one should have a voice, even if only temporary and would not hesitate to awaken himself should events turn too far from his favour.

The Sleepers soon discovered they could influence the thoughts and wills of Mortals and Cainites, guide them along a path that the victim did not know they were following. And all without being detected.

Ascendancy activity varies over time and era, here is a summary of their status.

Dark Ages
The Dark Ages were "Pre-Maleficus Pact" times, but four of their number had been cought and imprisoned.
Scylla Dree and Dareth Iscivizel were the only ones to successfully escape, and survived by possessing the bodies of Lasombra Cainites, keeping hidden their true identities.
They knew the potential power and influence of this clan during this time, and they conspired to engineer events to fit their plans.

Modern Era
The modern era was "Post-Maleficus Pact" and five of the six Acendancy would conceal themselves and enter a torpor-like state during this time.
Since the Dark Ages, the Ascendancy had managed to gain a great deal of power and influence yet kept it all very well hidden.
The four members who had been imprisoned during the time before the Dark Ages were freed and they enjoyed power like never before.
However, this was short lived, they had a betrayer amongst them. And his name was Morimorphus.

Dark Future
As the only surviving member of the Ascendancy, and the Diablerist of the previous five of it members, Morimorphus held the power of them all within a single shell of an ancient body.
His motives are known only to himself, and as ever, whatever plans the Ascendancy has, it has brought everyone to the edge of destruction yet again.
Only time will tell what his ultimate goal is........
