Converting with Elements

I think this will probably be more use if anyone is using an older version of elements. I know the latest versions have a B&W conversion function but older with versions it was a bit more tricky to get a decent conversion. I now use PS2 myself but I know there are people who do use elements so thought this might be useful.

This conversion technique tries to emulate the Channel Mixer in full photoshop and works by using a Levels Adjustment Layer.

When you are ready to do your conversion click on the Create Adjustment Layer pop-up on the Layers Palette (*half black/half white circle) and choose Levels. When the dialogue appears just click OK.

Again select the Create Adjustment Layer pop-up but choose Hue/Saturation this time. In the dialogue move the saturation slider all the way the left (to remove the colour).

Now, in your layers palette, double click on the Levels thumbnail in the levels adjustment layer you created above. This will bring up the Levels dialogue again. In turn select the red, green and blue channels and make adjustments to the various sliders to affect the look of your mono conversion. This will be a matter of trial and error and what works best for each image.

Hope this is helpful.

Regards

Hugh
