Gradient map

In PS if you add a black gradient map you get a conversion from colour to monochrome.
It is a blunt method but has anybody any comments on using it as the first line conversion prior to enhancing the image with masking, dodging etc?

Re: Gradient map

Hi Crimbo,

I realise that you posted this two years ago (!!!!!!) but wanted to add a comment anyway.

I have used gradient map as a first line conversion method. I find it works quite well on images which are lacking in contrast as it produces quite a good tonal range.

As you say it is a bit blunt but can be very effective as a first step. I will try and post an image I have converted this way later on (when I am at home) to illustrate.

Regards

Hugh
