Am I right in thinking the IR filter on the sd14 was housed forward of the sensor and used to keep dust from the sensor? meaning it is very easy to convert?

Not sure of 14 but SD10 has, yup, a removeable dustfilter which cuts out IR. Remove that and camera becomes IR sensitive (so takes IR + visible - which is what I use). Slap something like an R72 on and it becomes IR only (but useable at normal shutter/exposures)

great thanks, might have to look out for one and a decent wideangle.
I have a lot of respect for fuji and sigma for going their own way with sensors.
