Belated hello from Argyll
I joined this forum 18 months ago, but lurked, mainly because I couldn't get broadband, and images took so long to load. Now that we have a satellite service (0.5Mb/s is broadband here, at £24/month), I've put in a few images, and comments on others. But I forgot an introduction, so ...
I worked in research in photography (eg published "Visual factors in projected picture quality"), optics (eg designed and made some very strange aspherical lenses), optical coatings (eg patented wideband anti-reflection coatings), optoelectronics, photolithography, plasma etching, nanotechnology and ran an optical factory, but finished work running a teacher training degree and researching the use of technology in education. I did press and wedding photos for a while when young, but I'm much more keen on land/seascapes than portraits and sport.
Making photographs took a back seat for years, but I've come back to it, like many in retirement, with the potential of digital methods. Scanning hundreds of old B&W negatives and colour film has given me plenty to get on with, but now I've taken thousands of digital photos, of which a handful are almost worth showing. I still haven't yet bought a digital SLR, being spoiled by the ease and features of a wide zoom bridge camera, although often having to stitch multiple shots to overcome the small sensor size.
I used to develop 20"x16" prints with a sponge on the floor, not having a big tray, but an HP B8850 now seems fine for A3+ mono and colour prints. Mono has the promise of more drama in images, with scope to adjust regions for brightness and contrast that doesn't work so well with colour. Martin Evening's Photoshop CS4 book, Martin Henson's contrast grading video, and many examples on these pages inspire me to keep trying. So I'll keep putting on images for comments, and entering some of the monthly competitions.
Here's some images within a couple of miles from where I live: http://www.dutyhog.ukphotographers.com
Here's some I put into the local camera club (mostly colour): http://www.macc.ukphotographers.com/doughty.html

Re: Belated hello from Argyll
Great images! your scenery sure beats Manchester! I'd trade off broadband for decent scenery.

Re: Belated hello from Argyll
Welcome, but I understand how the bandwidth can be really irritating.
What are other people getting in the UK?
